We visited Newfoundland last year. We started in Port aux Basque, went to Gros Morne then to St. Johns and came back to the Port aux Basque and took that ferry back. We had a toad, so the total miles on the MH were about 1500 in Newfoundland (excluding getting there). We used the toad to take day trips from our campground including Labrador. We probably put another 1500 miles on the toad. We spent 30 days on the rock and loved every minute of it. The people are amazing.

You can check a lot of facts and figures from this site: http://www.roads.gov.nl.ca/cameras/default.stm It's a good one to have on the road.
It doesn't give you Port aux Basques to St. John's.. But having lived in Newfoundland (west coast) for 24.5 years, my memory says it will be about 930 kilometers from PAB to SJ. I know those who live there figure on 12 hours. But then they're used to it. It's not new scenery with interesting side sites to them.
RobandDi try to visit Newfoundland in the odd years and plan on being there for 2 months each time.
An alternate way you might go is the Trans Labrador Highway. The ferry crossing is St. Barbe to Blanc Sablon. The road opened in 2009 and is mostly gravel. It includes route 389 in Quebc.
I'm just tossing ideas.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

We have driven to Newfoundland five times and stayed from 2 weeks to 2 months each time.
2001 16 days 1475 miles
2003 26 days 2212 miles
2005 55 days 2854 miles
2007 60 days 3238 miles
2011 15 days 2547 miles
We tow a vehicle so above mileage does not include toad miles. We have stayed all over the island and did take rig to Labrador one year for a couple of days. We took the long ferry from Argentia one year and would not do it again nor do we recommend doing that. We find it is much better to drive back to Port aux Basques and take the short ferry both ways.
We fell in love with Newfoundland and the people on our first trip. I highly recommend staying as long as you can and boondocking as much as possible; this is the best way to meet locals … and we have met some real characters. I have never found funnier or more generous people who will help you out, entertain you, feed you and, in general, welcome you to their part of the world.
The weather in 2011 was awful – rain, fog and cold. In fact locals said first day of summer was 8/16 (the day before we left). Unfortunately that curtailed many of our normal activities (plus I was – and still am – recovering from total knee replacement). Plus we had motor home problems (some fairly serious) so we headed home earlier than we normal.
Our priorities are nature (scenery and animals), history, local culture and cuisine. We don’t like to shop and prefer the natural to the man-made so Newfoundland is ideal for us. Have a wonderful trip and if you have additional questions, you can pm me.

We too are planning a trip to Newfoundland this summer and are interested in the informations you all have posted. Bob's 100 year old mother was born there in Tilt Cove and wrote to six of the remaining relatives at Christmastime to tell them we are coming. One wrote back with photos of his new fishing boat.
Sadly, she died yesterday and we are here in Florida to plan and attend her funeral. But we had a good chance to be with her here and say goodbye. We talked together of our plans before age died, and are only sad she will not be here when we return with trip photos and stories. But perhaps she will be watching and enjoying from Heaven.
