When you start your trip, this SITE will help with road conditions and weather in Indiana.

Welcome to the area, it's really not that bad here, lots of places camp within a couple hours drive, some even closer in our back yard like Mauree bay state park. The weather is not that bad as we miss most of the heavy snow here in this corner of the lake, summers get hot and muggy and spring and fall are nice and mild, although its not that uncommon to get a freak snow storm at the end of March, camping season runs from April to Oct, that would be when you need to winterize/dewinterize. there are countless storage facilities everywhere around here , way cheaper than Ca, cost of living in general is way cheaper, if you have any questions about anything here in Toledo area feel free to ask.

My only real complaint about living in Ohio is the crappy 6 months of weather every year. Otherwise, you will run into many plusses, many of them having to do with cost of living and being less crowded.

A couple gallons of pink stuff and you are good to go, it's not a biggy.

I'm with your son on the route, check the extended forecast and if it looks good, go for it. Sure, the northern interstates can get really ugly in the winter, but MOST of the time, they are open and just fine. I40 can close just as easily in AZ and NM.

Easy for me to say, but just relax and enjoy the adventure. You have a place to land when you get there, you have a home on wheels along with you, it'll all work out in the end. Besides, you have family there and now you already have buckeye friends from on here. What could go wrong??

BTW, I vote for "camping" along the way.

Welcome to the Waterville area. We live just outside Whitehouse, but I'm in Waterville almost every day. It just became a city in the last census. and is generally a pretty good place to be. The downtown is small but nice, and it'll get a lot nicer later this year when the new US24 bypass gets opened and moves the truck traffic off the current US24 which passes right through the downtown area. There are all kinds of storage places for your rig, looks like you found one already.

Insurance rates should be lower. Taxes should be lower. Housing is certainly much lower. The county has an outstanding parks system, and several of them are in or very close to Waterville. The Anthony Wayne school district is also outstanding. The sales tax in Lucas County is 6.75%. Reasonable Ohio income tax, and cities are allowed to tax income up to 2.25% additional. If you live outside a city or village limits, generally no local income tax unless you earn it inside a city or village, or work/live in an enterprise zone.

License plates and drivers licenses are very reasonably priced. To title and register from another state to Ohio, you'll have to get an inspection which is very simple. You do not take it to an OSHP post. You take it to a certified inspection station, which are usually an authorized new car dealer or a deputy registrars office. They only check that the VIN, make, and model of the vehicle is the same as whats on the title. Fee is $3.50 plus $1.50 to the DR. No smog/emissions check in this area.

Weather.... not anywhere near as nice as San Jose. Starts getting a little colder in November, warms up usually around the end of March. Very little Lake Effect around here, as the prevailing winds are from the SW and less often the NW. Get 50 miles to the east and its a whole different story. If the wind would turn around and come out of the NE, Waterville still doesn't get all that much.... usually. Never can tell around here sometimes. This winter has been the mildest in quite a while.

It could be a tricky ride from CA to OH in March, especially through the Rockies. Should be interesting, keep an eye on the weather ahead of you.

From one NW Ohioan to a soon to be NW Ohioan we say WELCOME!!

I'm sure your questions have been answered many times over in this thread...I'll simply add that since we've had TT's here in NW Ohio we've always winterized by the standard RV Antifreeze in all pipes, traps, and the toilet bowl (make sure you get the outside shower if your TT is so equipped). The hot water tank is simply emptied..and left alone.

In the winter months we store out TT at the local fairgrounds so it can be totally enclosed inside a nice building to keep it out of the NW Ohio winter weather.

This winter has been unusual compared to normal...lots of precipitation but VERY little snow.

We've had winters like this in the past to be sure...it's just not the norm and we've had a string of pretty snowy/cold winters in a row (maybe 6-7?) which has made this one seem even milder. However I can remember numerous winters in the early 2000's, and especially the 90s that were similarly mild to this one... People seem to forget that around here I think..

Anyways...welcome.

Thank you very very much.

P.S. Winter here in Calif. has been so mild and dry that the state may be in for a drought. Late Fall, Winter, and early Spring is our time to get our water from Pacific rainstorms. They just aren't coming our way. They are all staying North up in Washington. Jet Stream is not shifting down.

Hope when we start our caravan to Ohio that the Jet Stream doesn't decide to shift our way. The Sierra Nevada mountain range is a nasty crossing via I-80 over Donner Pass during a Winter Storm.

Ohio is a great place to raise a family. As others said, things do seem to have a way of working out, someone must have a plan :-) There are a lot of good churches in the area, whatever your denomination, find one when you get here and you'll start meeting people quickly.
Take care and safe travels. You'll be in our prayers.

Can't tell you how much I appreciate your post. Things are pretty crazy around here. House looks like a bomb went off in it. So much to do to get ready.

Looks like we got a good deal on a 26' diesel Penske truck for our moving. Also it will be pulling a trailer with our son and daughter in law's 2000 Dodge Intrepid on it as the car is a high mileage vehicle. I will be pulling our 27' TT with the 2500 Dodge Cummins and probably will have the 2 cats in the trailer along with food stuffs etc.. Other two cars will be driven by my wife and daughter in law(4 vehicle caravan).

Think we'll take the Southern route out of Calif via I40 most of the way and then head Northeast somewhere in the Arkansas/Missouri area towards the Ohio Valley and Northward towards Toledo.

We have 2 more days to keep the dumpster in front of our house and fill it with all the things we aren't taking.

We had a moving sale and got rid of a lot of things. Made a few bucks that will help with traveling expenses.

Realtor wants to display our house after we are gone so he can install some new carpeting, and have a painter touch up things. Also the termite inspector and safety inspector will do their thing after the house is empty.

We keep getting company coming to visit to wish us well, but it is making packing a very slow process.

Right now the for sale house inventory in our area of San Jose is low, and that is good. There is a demand for homes in our area. It has a good school district, and is a quiet/friendly neighborhood.

We'll live with our son and daughter in law who reside in Waterville, OH, and then look for a home in the area after our home sells in Calif(Hope it sells quickly and we get some decent money towards a another home?).

Son and daughter in law and two grand kids moving out there with us have an apartment secured in White House, OH, which is very close to Waterville, OH.

Also, I've got a RV parking place in White House, OH. reserved too.

That Penske 26' truck looks very large and tall inside. I think we can squeeze everything in it.

Just pray for now mechanical breakdowns with 4 vehicles traveling. Also no accidents and decent road conditions.

I'd be a liar if I didn't admit I'm pretty anxious about all thats ahead.

I'm psyching myself up to get ready to be called an Ohioan. Being that I've been a native Californian.

Our state is just plain going crazy with regulations and other things.

Well, thank you again for your encouragement. As one poster said, "God has your back.". That's what I constantly need pounded into my heart and soul on a daily basis.

Good Luck 8ball...that is one HECKUVA move you have ahead. We here in the Buckeye State welcome you. I think you will find Ohio and especially NW Ohio a very nice place to live.

It's a laid back place..so if you like that you are really going to be happy.
