I've never seen times so far off between planning tools:
Good Sam trip planning 454 miles 8:23
Google maps 489 11:18
mapquest 489 14:21
Would you believe one over the other, or just assume there can be this much difference between one trip and another?

Mapquest is probably using Canadian minutes And Good Sam using average US/Canadian minutes.
Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

Welcome to the north, it is not the easiest place to build or maintain highways. If you were on that road last Sept it could have been several days.
I would totally disregard the first and not put much reliance on the others. Just go & enjoy.

Below the border I use a rule of thumb of 50 mph so it takes me 2 hours per hundred miles and I use 6.7 gallons of diesel per 100 miles on the average. North of the Canadian border, I figure on making roughly 40 mph or 2.5 hours per hundred miles. So for my driving style, I would go with the one closest to 11.25 hours for the distance of 489 miles, subject to fishing streams, photo opps, need to stretch, go for a hike and a few more variables. If I just do the regular stops in the north country, I plan my trips for about 2.5 hours per hundred miles and I won't be far off most days.

Depends on the route the map program takes. I had one that insisted I take a logging road in B.C.. I had to zoom in and set waypoints on the highway before it would route me on pavement.
When I moved from Northern Ontario to Northern Alberta, I had the same issue with being routed onto an unserviced logging road (hadn't seen a grader in three years). Luckily I knew about it.
When I checked the "use major freeways" option, it routed me through Texas.

LOL! Now that's funny. We had the same problem in Alaska. The dang GPS put us into an area where the roads were still being layed out. Had a heck of a time turning around at the end of the road where there was no turn around spot. Thank goodness for axes!!!!

Canadian minutes!! Well, I don't know for sure now but the last time I looked the minutes were the same everywhere in the world.

I'm sure I remember someone talking about changing our time over to the metric system. There would be ten seconds in a minute, ten minutes in an hour, ten hours in a day, ten days in a month and ten months in a year. Therefor, you would age that much quicker and retire that much earlier and hence have more time to go camping!!!! Sounds good to me!!!

"afraid of bears", you have my vote for President, or Prime Minister, or King, or whatever will make metric time happen!
