Closing on our stick home to go on the RV road for a year. Headed over to PPL in Houston as a Newbie in the next 7 days and am seeking your expertise, for those having time to offer up your robust opinions.

Our situation: Early 50s, retired for now, empty nesters, no pets. Budget $20K to $40K range and UNDER 40K miles. Layout-indifferent, queen size bed in back and longer kitchen counter top area is about it. No toad. Prefer 30-34ft, Class A, indifferent on diesel vs. gas as we understand the benefits/differences. PPL rating must be VERY GOOD or better.

My only question: Which ones from their current inventory of Class A gas and diesel would you advise us to take a serious look at. AGAIN, resale/holding value is important as we will need to sell to later build our next stick home. Gas and diesellinks are provided. And if you see any STAY AWAYS, let us know. Their list of Class A's is not real long.

This is a tremendous help to a Texas farm boy and his wife. Thanks!

If you buy something that is older and a good name you stand a better chance of taking less of a loss in a year. Repairs will have to be considered in there. A foretravel will probably not lose as much as a Pace Arrow in a year. I like the Newmar line so I may be partial but they do hold up well. Check for water leaks and tires. If you need a set of tires because the old ones are 6-9 years old you can add in $2-3000. for a new set of tires. If you look at a diesel you may find that 100K miles is nothing on a diesel. Your mileage requiirement may need a little adjusting.

Thanks, BSINMICH, yeah we are investing the $300 for an inspector. And I should have clarified/upped mileage on diesel to 80K or so in original post. Thanks for your quick response.

How long do you want it to hold its value?

My initial answer would be to say, look for high end units. They tend to keep their value better than entry level units. Also, go with popular models, say 34-36' gas or 40' diesel.

Hi hallock5,

Save your money on the inspector. I did that and he missed several things--like the oven not functional, and etc.

There are 3 important things to look for:

1. look for water leaks
2. look for stains from water leaks
3. LOOK HARDER FOR WATER LEAKS

Diesels are wonderful until you need repairs then they are outstandingly expensive. Besides at $40,000 you won't find one unless it is supremely old.

Low mileage is not necessarily a good thing. I'd look for an RV that was no older than 5 years. You may find better value in what is called a "super C".

Your travel style is very hard to predict right now, but if you think moving frequently as opposed to sitting a while is in your travel future. Be sure to find a floor plan that does not require slides out for comfort. In some plans you have to crawl over bed just to get to bathroom. Close slides of the ones you like and walk around, you will know. To me it's a bit like buying a house-who built it not as important as knowing you like it and getting a GOOD inspection. Drive several and not just the ones you like. Lots of other dealers in town but PPL is a great place to shop for used rigs - just know good ones don't last very long - often sold first day. Good luck with the search and enjoy retirement.
