I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find the posts.
Is there a motor size limit for bringing in a scooter where you do not require a TIP?
If a small scooters can be brought in, do they require a lioence plate on rear?
A friend bought a 150cc motor scooter in Mexico, sees other scooters his size all have licence plates. I told him only for residents but I want to make sure I didn't steer him wrong.

don't know about Mexico but I know the states vary widely on requirements. under 30 cc, must have pedals, etc. to not require license.

I bring my 49CC in each year & it is added to the truck TIP. It does have a plate. I actually remove it when crossing, since technically any on-road vehicle needs its own TIP, but from what I can tell anything less than 150 cc's can be added on to the truck TIP. I put the plate back on in Mexico & remove it again when I cross the border north. probably a waste of time, but then again I also move my front truck plate to the rear & stash the rear one (with the sticker) away. Since many states & provinces don't have front plates they don't know the dif. I stick a vanity plate on the front to replace it.
I suspect a scooter with a gringo on board with no plate could attract the attention of a transito looking for mordida even if they are not required. If he has no plate, maybe see if he can get an expired one of someone else.

For a TIP the vehicle in question has to be bigger than 250 cc. I'm not sure about the license plate question, but believe that, if you plan on riding on the streets & highways, it has to be street legal, which in the US would mean that it has a license plate.

But MX does not issue plates to tourists with FMM's. You must be a resident
Anybody near Playa del Carmen with an old USA or Canada licence plate? This scooter will stay with motorhome with 10 yr TIP.

My buddies here with quads are taking the small plate off their trailers and putting them on the quad to avoid tickets and hassles from the police!!

Funny, here in Mazatlan the transitos will sit on the side of the road with a truck and trailer untill it full of impounded Motos..
biggest problem is no plates, so you take the plate off the trailer and stick it on the Moto.. transito ask for your papers ??? ( I bet you would noT do this NOB, why here.)
oops nada. your bike is on the trailer, times are changing ??? folks..

If you have a 150cc scooter, to be sure you have a license plate and a insurance for this vehicle. But also important you have an International Driver License if you are from Quebec. Some Police-officer, can ask you, in Acapulco, if you don't have one. You can be sure, you have to pay a bribe... Some Quebec'er did it...

I always got an international driver's license whenever I traveled "overseas". it was a recommendation made so that if any gendarmes confiscated your driver's license, it was just the international one and you can easily replace it.

Any tourist that buys anything with a motor while in Mexico is just asking for trouble. This includes (but not limited to) RV's, ATV's, boats, outboards, cars, sand rails, or bikes. It doesn't matter what the nationality/origin of the purchase, purchaser, or seller is, all such transactions are going to be a big can of worms!
