There is an interesting topic about vanilla on the Snowbird forum.
It simply states that 99% of vanilla bought SOB is not what one may think it is.
I have a 500 ml bottle in front of me and I wonder if anyone would know if I have the real stuff or the poor intimation or worse yet the harmful concoction? Below is what is on the bottle for labels;
a round sticker label with a picture of a rooster
a rectangular sticker above the all Spanish bottle label, in large print: NO CONTIENE CUMARINA, PURE VANILLA DOES NOT CONTAIN COUMARIN
And finally, the bottle label:
Danncy

Sounds like you have a 1% chance you have the good stuff, not very good odds.
Here is the article. Mexican/SA vanilla

My wife is more the expert. She continually looks for good,not artificial vanilla. It has been getting very difficult to find. Our understanding is that the a lot of the remaining vanilla growing areas on the eastern Sierra Madre were severely damaged during the hurricanes a couple of years ago and there just aren't many good trees/bushes left.
Apparently a lot of it was grown in the area from Veracruz north toward Poza Rica which were really hurt by the storms.

I certainly would not trust the Vanilla in Algadones. Actually I wouldn't trust anything in Algadones other than the great dentists. We buy our Vanilla in large grocery stores in non tourist areas.

We bought "White Vanilla" once as a gift for someone who bakes a lot! After it had been in the Cupboard in Canada for a few weeks it started to look like Feathers were growing inside the Bottle.
The Brand was Gallo which means Rooster in Spanish!
We haven't even looked at Vanilla down here ever since.

Make your own REAL vanilla extract.
To make your own vanilla extract, place 1 whole vanilla bean, cut in half lengthwise, into 3/4 cup (180 ml) of vodka. Cover tightly and let steep for 6 months before using.

It is really hard* to find Mexican vanilla that can match the quality and price of vanilla sold in the USA in COSTCO. It may not be Mexican vanilla, but its purity is unquestioned and has an enthusiastic "thumbs up" from my friend Brenda, who makes the best flan in Mexico.
