a couple of questions; looking for a different route west from the Albany NY region to Glacier National Park, and then to Waterton and Banff NP in Canada. Have a large 5er that's 13'4" at the front AC. any info on campground, wildlife, History, routes, etc. This will be a Summer 2012 end of June to August trip

For a change, how about coming across all the way in Canada to Edmonton on CAN 1, then to Jasper and down to Banff and Waterton.

What do you mean by different route? Have you traveled to these spots before, and want something different along the way, or is this your first time? Also which part of the trip do you need the advise? Closer to NY, around Chicago, Black Hills, or just the Glacier north part? Do you want to go back a different way than you came? Take your time all along the route, or push to cover the eastern part fast?
The Roads & Routes section has lots of threads about travel to Black Hills, Yellowstone, and Glacier NP. Here you will find more threads about Banff and Jasper, and occasional discussion of the TransCanada Route. Alaska bound people also talk about Banff.

We went across on U.S. 2 and back on trans canada.
Hwy 2 was relaxing and had cheaper fuel then on the interstates.
Both routes scenic and boring .The plains are the plains on both sides of the boarder.

Okay..how about highway 40, right across to Aurora, Colorado, north on 87/25 and so on?
Nope..I haven't, but by the looks it, a straight forward way to get there.

Hwy 40? For a moment I thought you were going to talk about the Alberta forestry trunk road. That's one way from Waterton to Banff. However the southern part is gravel. 22 to Longview would be a smoother alternative; then west to Highwood Pass and the Alberta Kananaskis Country parks. This is a good route to see big horn sheep.

Paulj...the OP says coming from Albany NY. I was thinking 40 in Alberta, which I have been on, wasn't going to play a role in the travel plans. I could be wrong, tho.

There is a US40, better known as I70 that crosses from Pennsylvania to Colorado. Apart from bypassing Chicago, it does not add much in the way of sights compared to I80 or I90. I70 west of Denver is the scenic stretch.
I would prefer US2 from Upper Michigan. From Albany NY I'd seriously consider crossing part of Ontario to get to Michigan.

I don't know what "CAN 1" is. If you mean the Trans Canada, the closest it gets to Edmonton is about 330 klicks south of Edmonton., Calgary.
