In other words, no 4 wheel drive and towing a 25 foot trailer.
I assume boondocking is camping off the beaten path. Does that usually mean no one else is there or that there just aren't any hookups of any kind?
If the idea of boondocking is to go where you can use your outdoor shower sans swim suit , then I'm all in! I like the idea of camping, now and then, where no one else will be found.
Why are there only 3 topics in this forum? Am I missing something? Very interesting computer behavior (or tech error), suddenly all the other topics are showing up as I was hoping for.
How do I find places to boondock where my 2wd and 25 ft trailer can go with minimal risk?
Are there any cool books on boondocking?
And ...

You are correct. Boondocking is off the beaten path, not at the Cracker Barrel parking lot!! I've boondocked in places where your birthday suit attire requirement was only based on the outside temps and how warm you wanted to be and I've boondocked in places where it was a fairly popular spot but still off the beaten path.
The best boondocking spots I've found were either word of mouth or I found by accident. BLM land in the west is quite often utilized for boondocking.

Bryan-
Wecome to the forum! Keep reading, like maybe the last two or three months of posts in the boondocking forum. You'll find many different opinions of what bookdocking is, and perhaps even suggestions of books. If you don't find what you need, then come back and ask.

Towing a 25 foot TT with a 4X2 dictates you will be camping in semi remote places. Down a fire road a couple of miles, NF camp grounds are two popular boondocking locations. Don't expect to have water and no one else around you though. Water will always attract people. Soon they become designated camp grounds.

Interesting point about where there's water there will be others. I can certainly handle a couple of days without water! Everything I do is with others so it will be fun to find some just me spaces.
Will keep reading now that I've got the forum bugs worked out.
And, yes, not looking for dry camping in franchise parking lots.
Thanks

Boondocking can be done anywhere outside of town and it MAY mean you're are also camping in a disbursed camping area or with a group in a campground with no hook ups or facilities. It's an "squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares" type of thing.

There is some excellent information about boondocking at Boondocking Tips, Links, and Information
If you REALLY want to learn how to boondock, spend some time there. There are information sources listed that tell you things you should know, and tips on finding great boondooking locations. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it, and know the rules which change from state to state, national forest area to area, and many other public land locations few folks think about.
Lots of folks want someone to to tell them where the great spots are, and to be sure, there are some great boondocking locations listed online. However, I doubt many boondockers are willing to give away their very favorite place. I know I wont, though I will share just about any other spot I know of.

Bryan -- locate the national forest website for the area you are considering, and type in "dispersed." That'll usually take you to the forest's policy on remote boondocking. Then talk to the ranger. A topo map and plenty of extra "scouting" time are also very useful -- those items will keep you from getting too far up a difficult road with no place to turn around. (Please don't ask me how I learned this lesson.)
If you have a minute, click on my blog link and search for the term "boondocking." You will see what it entails -- lots of effort, lots of fun. (I won't comment on your clothing-optional idea, but I will note that it is easy to find solitude.)
Just one request -- treat the land as gently as possible -- we often see folks who drive off road over the bushes and who leave trash. Thanks!

We have never needed 4x4 to get to where we are boondocking but that's not to say there are many places we can't take our 25 ft TT even if we did have the 4x4 on.
Once we are set up, we explore the area for more sites but we usually end up turning around once the road gets rougher than I want to take the TT down and that's long before I would need 4x4 to continue.
We also will look up new areas and take day trips to see them in off times like this. It gives us a good idea of what the roads and sites are like before we drag the TT a few hundred miles only to find out we can't go there.
