Well, guess it had to come about, I clicked on an item I should not have. The nasty virus - Smart Protection 2012 was installed on my hard drive before I could react. This virus wants to sell me a program which will unlock the virus for a fee - yea, sure.
I have instlled on my computer: Microsoft Security Essentials and had everything up to date, with the firewall turned on. I was relying on the program to protect me - wrong!!! Some how, the virus got around the Microsoft program. Don't think I'll rely on Microsoft's programs again!
I downloaded a free edition of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program and was able to open it in safe mode. The program detected two malware programs, I quarntened them and then deleted them. The program failed to detect the Smart Protectioon 2010 virus.
Downloaded the Troubleshooting program from Microsoft, it did not detect anything. The virus is still there.
The virus has my computer locked up and is being held for ramsom. HELP!!!
Does anyone have any suggestions? Will Norton 360 detect and eliminate the virus? I am about to run out of options.
Your assistance will be appreciated by my wife - she is about ready to buy another computer.
Thanks in advance.

The cheapest option may be to take it into a computer repair guy. I have Zone Alarm Extreme Security and the purchased Malware bytes security. I'm surprised Malware bytes didn't find it. I have the Microsoft security shut down. Never used it.

Download and run - SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition - My son had a similar situation a while back and ran this with success. Also, don't trust MS to protect your computer...also download and run AVG 2012 Antivirus program. Have this on ALL of my computers including work computers and never have a problem with virus infection. Good Luck!!!

No Anti Virus or Malware program can protect you against this, no matter what the cost of the software!
It can be removed. There are several Youtube video's that can walk you through the process.

Use one of these methods, Kaspersky Smart Protection 2012 removal or Remove Smart Protection 2012 (Uninstall Guide).

I use a Sandbox Program which keeps anything from being saved to my Hard drive. When I get offline, I delete the Contents of the Sandbox and it is gone, no matter what it was.
God Bless!
