At least 9 dead and 17 or more injured in accidents south of Gainesville. Fires create havoc on the road.

That's messed up. Hopefully the condition resolves itself quickly.

Seems like these kinds of accidents are occurring more often. Maybe common sense is lacking? We have a similar problem up here with people driving in "blinding" snow storms without any headlights/tail lights turned on. Probably think their "daylight lights" are doing the job.

i drive I-75 between I-10 and Venice, FL a couple of times a year. that stretch of road, especially between Lake City and I-4, is a NASCAR track. lots of weaving from lane-to-lane, folks cutting to the right for an exit from the far left lane. i'm surprised there aren't more major wrecks.

I live close to this accident. There was a arson fire on the Paynes Prairie which I-75 cuts thru at that point. The FHP closed I-75 in the morning and then re-opened it later. The smoke increased again, according to one report by a woman who pulled off the road she could barely see the end of her hood. She then reports hearing 15 or more crashes but could not see a thing.

10 dead found so far, 21 sent to the local hospitals. Several semis burned out and at least one rv reported involved.

Hindsight is 20-20 but the FHP should have kept the road closed or put out those electronic signs reducing speed drastically. It's hard to close that section of road tho since there is a lot of traffic on it and the obvious bypass road, US 441, also passes thru the prairie. The other detour would be to US 27 but that's 15 miles west and you'd have to use a narrow country highway to get to it. No good solution.

I don't think putting out electric signs saying to reduce speed would have helped. Most people would ignore them just like the signs that say merge now.

If people don't slow down when they can't see past their hood through the smoke, I highly doubt any kind of sign would have helped.

Similar to when fog conditions are severe and there are multi-car pile-ups. People just keep blindly blasting down the road when sight distance is down to nothing. I just don't understand this mindset.

I have never seen people drive the way they do in Florida. Its unnerving. Aren't speed limits there for a reason?
