I probably have several extra legs in the attic. If it's your left side, I'd gladly give you one. It might be kind of hard to find one with a good knee joint. Fair warning, I've broke every one they made at least once.
I know how bad it is to be hobbled up, just be glad it's not summer. Come spring when everythings blooming you'll be budding out also.
Grab a bag of popcorn, a drink and enjoy a movie. Keep your mind and hands busy. Exercise the leg as directed.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. I am 67 and generally in good health so am hoping my recovery will go well. I go back to the Ortho tomorrow and hopefully he will let me do a little wt. bearing, if not back to the old w/c and be patient. Thanks again, there could be worse things, I need to keep reminding my self.

This young man was laid on his side. The knee was pulled to align the bone. A long metal rod was hammered (really was, with a metal mallet) into the center of the bone from the hip, up thru the break. Was my first witness to such a major operation.
Wish you a speedy recovery. Very major break.
Wow. thanks for that visual. I think I'm going to be sick now.
OP, you just broke the strongest bone in your body. It takes a long time for it to heal properly and you're going to have to be patient with the process. My youngest son(16) fractured his femur last year and even at his young age, it was months of recovery. I imagine for an adult it might take a long time to fully recover. Hope you can get down to Cocoa Beach soon.I'm sure they have PT down there too. A change of scenery might do you good. That makes my steel plate sound better. Runs from the knee all the way up. Got a piece of my hip in there as a graft. Eat lots of yogurt for the calcium. Do you physical therapy. I was off work for 6 months. That was over 20 years ago. Still have the plate. Doesn't affect much except that leg is a bit shorter. Have to get pant legs altered. And yes, I can feel weather changes, but not able to predict exactly what is coming. I just know that a weather change is coming.

Goodnes man, I thought of all the hard work I'll be looking at after next Thursday when I get my second TKR. I started of at about 30 mins a day and in six weeks was up to a couple of hours but you're in for a long recovery. I concur in that a change of scenery would be benificial and PT, PT, PT. Hope you're back on that leg soon and out traveling and remodeling.

I split the two bones just below the knee and have plates holding them together. This happened in 2007, and it was several months before I was weight bearing (maybe 3), was to use a walker, then cane. Still have the walker, never touched the cane, but still use the crutches if walking on uneven terrain or going a long distance.
I drove (automatic) within 2 weeks of surgery (went off pain meds) with my left leg/foot operating both gas and brake. Propped right leg over the console. Drove from FL to MD that way with no problems. I had a passenger to assist me with pumping gas, etc. At this time I was still in a wheel chair, which I could fit behind the seat of the truck.

Went to Dr yesterday and got a good report, can touch toe wt bearing now but he did tell me it would be a yr before I would be back to normal. I had a pretty bad break, got my xray and he put a rod from femur all the way to the knee and at the head of femur he put a long screw that went over to the ball to hold rod in olace and then wrapped rod with sets of wires. My pain is decreasing and will continue with PT 3x a wk for the next mo as an outpt. Keep me in your prayers. Thanks for your encouragement
