will be staying the first summer in bullhead city az this year. i have window awnings but no slide toppers over the 2 slide outs. any thoughts or other suggestions about buying those 4x8x 2in sheets of Styrofoam insulation from home depot, cutting them to the size of the roof over the slide out, gluing that silver windshield stuff on it and wedging it on the slide out top on a slight angle for the rain run off.
would this help with defusing some of the heat off the slides or does someone have a better idea?
thanks

That will work just make sure that it doesn't trap water at the seal. My slide roof is too insulated and I cant get snow to melt off.

I have an awning cover and have seriously considered making something like this. My thought has always been to wrap it in vinyl to keep it from looking too trashy though.

I wouldn't worry about the heat too much. We haven't noticed any big difference. Not too much rain in Bullhead City during the summer.......If, big if, you think it's a problem after you've been there awhile, go to HD and get your stuff...don't overthink it.....JMHO........Dennis

Hi,

Some insulation has foil already bonded to it.

I'm not sure how much benefit you will really get from it as you still have the slide-out sides exposed to the sun and heat as well. I honestly think the benefit would be minimal if any at all...just my two cents.

If you lived in AZ, like I do, you would know just how much heat from direct sunlight can come through a ceiling with inadequate insulation. The sides still get heat from the sun but, since the sun shines on them obliquely, it isn't nearly as much as from the roof. Even the thin fabric of a slide topper can make a large difference in the amount of heat a slide roof receives because the topper shades the roof from the sun.

The biggest problem you would get from the foam would be wind blowing it away. I suggest you come up with a more secure way of fastening the foram than merely wedging it.

If you have room for it, another alternative would be to put the foam on the ceiling inside the slide. You would have to remove any overhead cabinets, then reinstall them after the foam is installed, to get the maximum benefit. You could just cover the foam with a matching wall covering (lighter) or paneling (more durable) and hide (and protect) the exposed front edge with a matching wood strip.

While more insulation or slide toppers wouldn't make a large difference in the temperature in the slide itself, the radiant heat beating down on you from above would be greatly reduced.
