burlmart wrote: , could broadcast tv shows be compressed/trimmed so that they consume less data and so might also be received from the phone providers sometime in the future?. Probably. Direct TV is compressed right now, and you still need a big dish to get it.
All this data takes a lot of bandwidth, and the technology just isn't there yet.

Can wireless internet providers compete with cable price wise.. Check out Internet 2000 at http://www.i2k.net/ This company offers wireless internet in many Michigan communities that do now have high speed wired internet.
Can TV be compressed enough to be carried on phone lines, NO and Yes, copper pairs at dial=up speeds, not really, you'd have to download and play later.
However DSL it might work
And if you are lucky enough to get on AT&T's Fiber net.. no problem today.
There are limits to compression. Even at the compression levels now in use for Digital TV and Sat TV (Which is also digital) there is some loss.
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

If you're one person, you can be happy with online monitor.
I gave up my company tv package via antenna.
I am able to watch online television and online radio, plus all youtube videos.
& I live in a rural area.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Completely wireless here!
I've been on the road Full Time for about 3 years now. Cell phone, mobile broadband, normal antenna TV. Doing business, taking care of finances and enjoying 20 to 40 TV channels for free. And they don't play the same movie over and over all month like paid cable! I will never have cable again.
Since going digital antenna TV has tons and tons of channels. I was a cable junkie back home but when I buy another house......there will be NO cable and/or dish, or land line phone. IPhone, IPad, mobile broadband is all you need and will get you thru life just fine, JMHO.
We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned,
so as to have the life that is waiting for us.

Our only options here are fairly slow DSL or Time Warner Cable at 20Mb. It will be quite awhile before 4G or FiOS hits this part of Upstate NY...

Not True, we are currently upgrading EVERY Verizon and AT&T cell site from multiple T1's to Gigabit Fiber circuits.
I have no idea about other providers.

AT&T Uverse sends voice, video, and data over phone lines from their fiber node to your house.

Ok, I've a 19" wide monitor. It's ok for me to sit here and view a tv program.
& that wouldn't be ok for a family of 3 or 4. So, I don't know how online tv works for others.

Our cable company provides free wireless service to wired cable customers for when they are out in the community - they cover most of two counties. They claim that their wireless speed on this system is faster than 4G. The problem is that inside the house, there is a signal of one or two bars on wifi reception of this service - and in some buildings no service at all. It is a nice feature provided without charge but I would not want to rely upon it for my full time service. I'll keep my wired connection.
