Debating a trip to the Ottawa / Montreal are for mid-August.

Would like to spend a few days in the woods and see that Mont Termblant is close by.

Equipment is a 30ft motorhome with tow with Kayak for lake paddling.

Questions:

Is it worth trying to get into one of the in-park campgrounds (preferred), or are reservations difficult to get unless you are on-line at midnight on the first day of the reservation window (4 months ahead of intended arrival). Hook-ups are not a necessity.

Should I avoid weekends?

As a citizen of US, do I need to do anything special to get into the reservation system?

Is it worth dragging a kayak up there for only three or four days?

Are there opportunities for light hiking?

Scenic drives?

Wildlife photography?

How much bug spray will I really need in August?

If not Mont Tremblant, where would you recommend for scenery and somewhat quiet within a couple hours of Ottawa or Montreal?

Unfortunately I am locked in to early to mid August.

Any enlightenment appreciated.

We've never been to Mont Trembland but if you look a little NW from Ottawa you will find Algonquin Prov. Park. They have CGs in and out of the park, lots of rivers and lakes and loads of wildlife. My first night camping was in Algonquin. I am not sure you could call the drop down seats of a '61 Rambler camping but that is what we did.

YES

NO

This is a land of lakes and rivers
Are there opportunities for light hiking?
Miles of trails

Scenic drives?
Scenery all over the place

Wildlife photography?
All you want

How much bug spray will I really need in August?
NO! Bugs die off mid July but it doesn't hurt to bring some

You're in the right area, lots to chose from

Mont Tremblant Park is one of our favorite places to camp. Wayne pretty much answered all your questions.

Our first choice is the Le Chevreuil campground at Lac Monroe; it as 3 hook-ups (30-amp).

We usually always go during the week. I make my reservations a couple months ahead of time and our favorite time to go there is late August thru late September. It's when the Loons are back on the lakes in the evening. I sometimes log in and see what available and just book a couple weeks ahead if we find a spot for 2-3 week-days open; an advanatge to being retired.

We've had deer run through our campsite, a fox along the perimeter foraging for food and we've had a moose walk the road by our camper at 5:30am one fall day. I've never seen bears myself but I have come across bear scat along hiking trails. We also gotten the occassional wolf warning from the park ranger staff patroling. Check the My Photos link in my signature; I still have some old Tremblant pics there.

Thanks for the information.

Like state parks in the states, most are to be avoided on weekends in the summer.

I will look at the alternate park as well. I will need a little quite time after visiting the cities and either park will probably work out.

I seem to be having difficulty getting a lot of information about Canada parks. Certainly no printed material here in the states. I'll keep digging.

As i continue my reserach I will likely have more queries.

Thanks again for the responses.

Wayne, me son, first of all, you have to look at Canadian sites. It helps to use a Canadian domained search engine, google.ca or yahoo.ca, as in: https://www.google.ca/

Next, the words you use as your search term, t'ain't 'Mericanese, sir, tis Canuck speak, for example, "Quebec Tourism", or "Ontario Tourism".

But should you want a city, it's name of city + Chambre of Commerce (just maybe Chamber, though), ie. "Montreal Chambre of Commerce"

'K, does ye gets all that? (even with me using sort o' a Newfoundland acccent)

I also find telephone gives you a chance to ask for special interests.........hiking, historical section, museums...........concerts

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Thanks Little Kopit.

Appreciate your humorous and informative reply.

I had no idea that there was a Canadian Google.

Now if I can only type with a Canadian accent I might find more.

Decifering the language and street signage is part of the adventure I enjoyed visiting north of the border two years ago (Quebec that time). Visitng nother country within a days drive from home has great appeal.
