Oddly enough, we are using Dish for TV and our cable company for phone. We were using our phone company for internet, but they really got bad, so we now have internet with our cable company.

Do I believe it.. Yes, I do, in fact I have seen many here in this family of forums and in other forums dedicated to satellite TV making the same complaints.
So yes, I believe them.
However, when you read the FULL text of the linked article.. his complaint was that HE did not read the fine print, he admitted it. He did not read the fine print.
In some cases (insurance policies for example) selected fine print, now, by law, must be bold print of a minimum size in some states.. I think this should apply to ALL fine print myself.

We have FIOS, had some problems with them too. Picture has always been good though. I thought I was getting a DVR for nothing, one guy said with all our HD TV's we can have it free, got charged the next month. Seems the first guy didn't tell the truth? He also said I could upgrade all my boxes to HD boxes for free because we have all HD TV's....Lied again. How can an employee get away with this? I even got his name, didn't matter. One good thing, I pay more but I have no contract. We have the triple package with 6 tv's, phone, internet and tv....that's why I was getting the (insert laugh) deal.

I only have one complaint with DirectTV. For two years I paid for the protection service monthly. This was to insure that if I ever had cable or installation problems they would come fix it for free. Well ... I had a problem and when I told them where my motor home was parked I was informed they would not work on a motor home. I asked why I had been paying for this service on a SECOND, SEPERATE, account they made me get so that I could have the mobil feed from New York or Los Angeles and that my receiver was clearly maked Motor Home Living Room. She couldn't answer this question so I eventually made my way up the ladder to a supervisor who authorized a rebate.

We cancelled our Direct TV service because we're travelling for my hubby's job for an extended period of time. In 2008 we purchased a High Def TV ... at that time and for where we live DTV told us we HAD to purchase the HIgh Def DVR for $300+. NOW when we cancelled the service we HAD to return BOTH receivers. I told them we paid over $300 for it and we OWNED it .... it had been swapped out because the first Hi Def DVR failed very quickly and according to DTV we no longer owned the DVR and to avoid bad credit woes we HAD to return the DVR. Total rubbish .... but now being on Comcast ... they're expensive and I;m not thrilled with them either. ANY industry NOT regulated (like the electric & phone service USED to be) is rubbish.

I definately believe him, as I to have been screwed with by DirectTV. I was a DTV customer for 12 years.
My story is that last year in October I got a call from DirectTV offering to extend to me (almost) FREE movie channels on a trial bases, (HBO, CiniMax and others) for 6 months for $1 along with NFL sunday edition (I don't watch sports). I inquired at the time what the catch is, and was repeatedly assured that I could cancel at any time with no fees or penalties involved. I agreed, and we got the movies.
Fast forward 6 months on and we see our bill go from $110 to $240. I called Customer Service and they check and the special that I was enjoying had expired. Ok, no problem, please cancel the extended service. Ok, they say, and we will refund you back $60. But wait aminute! 240-110=130, not 60. Oh, well you got NFL Sunday ticket and you have to pay 6 months for that, and that's the additional $70.
So I and try to explain the conversation that we had 6 months previous (no contract other then the verbal) and they are SO SORRY that -I- have this misunderstanding, but I still owe them $70.
So I say, "Look, I've been a LONG time DirectTV customer for over a decade, and you REALLY don't want to tick me off on this." (Them, Sorry), "Are you SURE you want to insist that I pay you the $70?" (them, yes), "Last chance, and there is nothing that you can do?" (them, sorry!). "OK then!"
And since I was well out of my obligation contract with DirectTV, I looked at Metrocast cable (neither FIOS or Comcast is available) and they were more expensive, but DISH network offered me close to the same programming, better receivers and 1 extra TV hooked up on a 2 year contract with free installation at $30 less a month then DirectTV for the first 6 months and then $20 less a month after that). DEAL!
So Dish comes in and does their install thing. I stack my old DirectTV receivers in a corner and I call DirectTV and tell them to discontinue my service and send me the boxes to return their receivers. Man you should have heard their cancellation department scream. "Oh, but sir, you have been a customer for years" (guess your customer service department shouldn't have ticked me off then), "We will forgive the $70 charge" (to late, and why couldn't customer service do that when I asked them to), "We will pay the DishTV cancellation fee", (sorry, no longer trust you, and their cheaper), "We will meet their pricing for the first year" (sorry, but no).
Their cancellation department called me once a week for a month offering deals to get me back. I told them -nooooo-.
Bye bye DirectTV, hello Dish.
For those that have never had a problem with DirectTV, it's all good unless you have a dispute.

I had almost the exact same story but was with Dish Network and switched to Direct TV. Seems like they all have their problems.

It seems each company (cable or satellite) seems to be in a race to see who can provide the WORST customer service. I think the phone companies are in the same race. I'm not sure who is winnign that race, but I know we as customers are losing.

Direct TV for 6 years. At first they gave us some aggravation. Since then just have to call and get the channels back up after TV hasn't been used for a while.
We have one of the old pkgs and they want us to upgrade which is actually fewer channels at more money. No way.

I've had Directv for years and never had any problem at all. Just one time when I called about some promotion or other. I was told it was for new customers only. I'm afraid I got a little snappy with the woman. I asked her what the heck do they offer good loyal customers who've been paying that outrageous monthly bill for so long? Maybe I should look into their competitor's offer for new customers? That got me 10.00 a month off the bill for a year and 3 months of free movie channels. Might be time to try that again,it's been awhile! LOL Won't know till I try.
