The comment was funny, but finding a pic that matches it is PRICELESS.

What the heck is piano hinge? Got a pic?
The trucker hinged one sounds like a good plan. I have the same concerns as the OP. It sounds like it must be illuminated?

Stainless Steel Piano hinge form home depot. Yes, it needs to be illuminated or you risk a roadside converstaion. In California -this could lead directly to a ticket for out of class driving depending on the GVW sticker on the trailer.

in case you are still looking...
hinged license plate
You should be able to somehow keep the orig license plate light with a few modifications...I really sometimes dont see why the plate has to be illuminated...the headlights of any vehicle behind would light it up, right? But legally...

If it were my rig, I'd look at using the upper middle running light position on the back for the license plate. One might have to customize a frame for the plate to fit those existing holes, but the right wiring is there for lighting the plate.
And it'd sure be "in plain view" for anybody that's looking for it!
yes thats what it looks like.
thats actually not a bad idea, besides having to climb up there once a year to put a new sticker on LOL,

NHSTA is silent concerning height above the ground for License Plate lighting but might want to check with your state before mounting it up that high. LEO's won't probably look that high and it might get you a road side conversation. Every road side conversation has a 50% chance of a "bad for you" outcome.....

I checked this out before suggesting the above-the-door location for the plate.
The requirement nationwide is that the plate be "plainly visible day and night" (Whence the need for lighting).
An LEO would have to be blind as a bat to miss a plate in such a conspicuous spot, especially if lit.
