I recently upgraded my trusty UM175 Verizon aircard to a Motorola Droid Razr. Along with that I wanted to add a line, and port my ATT phone number. It turned out to be pretty easy, but I felt I had to ask a lot of questions of humans to feel confident. I found that many of those humans have no idea what they're talking about.

It really boiled down to this: Don't try to do everything at once!

Job one was to buy the phone online (very easy), and simply keep the same "number" as the aircard. Yes, aircards have a number. The setup directions with the phone said I had to call Verizon to get it activated. Not true. I could have done it online, but, I had an existing account so maybe if you're a new customer you would have to call.

All the humans at Verizon said I had to call to get a number ported. Again not true. That was very easy to do online and took maybe 15 minutes after I'd made the request. My ATT account was inactivated by the porting.

Contact information was a bit more of a challenge. I didn't find an easy way to save them from my ATT clamshell to download to the Razr. Fortunately most all my contacts were in my Gmail contacts, which the Droid easily downloaded. What's really cool is that if you change a gmail contact it's almost immediately present in your phone. Very nice. Job three will be to buy another phone (online of course) and add to this account. I'm pretty confident that won't be a problem.

I'm just astonished at the varying degree of knowledge of the salesforce. I actually had a 'Tameka' ask me if my new Droid Razr was a smartphone or a standard phone. It's news to me that a Droid Razr could be anything but a smart phone.

Did you keep your existing data plan for the Razr? I'm guessing you had to go to a voice/data plan, but no new commitment??

Oh yes, a whole new data plan. 2 year contract. I will try the hotspot feature but may go back to tethering.

I'm using the 3g hotspot right now. Not in a 4g area. It's very good, fast, faster than Tengo internet. Wow.. I'm pleased.

Gotcha-I was hoping!

I have an old aircard and don't want to go to a usb modem because of durablity issues-would love to wifi tether a droid but don't need a 2nd line and am lucky to be one of the grandfathered few with unlimited MB's on my plan that I don't generally use or abuse...interesting to find out how easy it was for you to port your number!

Congratulation! on the Razr. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have mine. I learn more things it can do everyday.

I had a problem getting the discount "new customer" rate at Costco because I had a month to month aircard with Verizon last summer. Believe me Costco phone sales people are about as dumb as they come. I was also porting a number from AT&T, but use an aircard from Verizon for 2 months and Costco said no new customer discount. Put the phone in DW's name, got the discount, then went to Verizon a week later and had the phone put in my mane and applied for the military discount. Simple, but Costco had to make it hard.

Enjoy the Razr!

Wow.. those discounts don't come easy!

I am enjoying it very much. Took some video with it yesterday, and it's way better quality than my $300 Zoom "HD" camera. Interfaces with my computer easily, great graphics, and very thin. I'm struggling just a bit with text replying and having it show me a 'conversation' flow.

One app I was really looking forward to was the Chase check deposit. It works! Wow.. depositing a check over the airwaves. Amazing.

Last night online I got an iPhone 4s for the gf. I could not figure out how to do a Family Plan with my new phone and hers, so, after a chat with a tech online, I just picked the cheapest individual plan (ip) and will sort out the FP later. I was given no option to change my ip to an fp, and the flow of the purchase was cumbersome in other ways. At the end I was asked for ID to do a credit check, although I've been with V for 3 years.

I've noticed the Hotspot has locked up a couple times. Have to restart phone to get it to work. I may opt for the tether feature if this keeps up. Perhaps visit a Razr forum and find out what's up.

the next time it locks up
try switching to airplane mode, wait 10 seconds
then switch back to normal mode

this is faster than rebooting

Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother
