Filing system? What does this have to do with 64-bit drivers?

Wrong. And yes it is.

Both OS's use NTFS. XP did give you the option of FAT 32 but Windows 7 does not.

Thanks to all who responded. The reason I must chose between a 32 and 64 bit computer is that I buy from eBay and both are available in new and used computers. I feel assured that a 64 bit computer won't be a problem with my software, flash drives, or peripherals after reading your replies. When buying I try to move toward the newest features withing a reasonable price range. Computers become dated soon enough anyway. Thanks again.

If you have an Apple computer it comes with a 64 bit OS. If you buy a laptop with Windows 7 as the operating system there are at least 6 different versions being sold. Best to get the Pro 64 bit version and to not buy the home 32 bit version. With the latter you can spend more money for an upgrade but it is cheaper to buy the laptop with 64-bit Windows already installed.

Primary advantage of 64-bit is ability to use more than 4GB of RAM memory. Helpful for photo editing, CAD programs, and similar applications. A 64-bit operating system adds no benefits if the laptop has 4GB of RAM or less (and some will not take more than this amount and the rest are limited to 8GB). 64-bit OS provides no advantages for email, word processing, spreadsheet programs, and similar applications used 99% of the time by most people.

Apple and Lenovo provide top class after purchase customer support. Dell, Toshiba, and HP are in the middle but not nearly as good, and the worst is Asus.
Google on "Asus" and "problem" and you will find thousands of Asus laptop owner posts about terrible customer support with problems with the computers. ONLY with Lenovo (formerly IBM's PC group) and Apple are you going to call customer support and talk to someone in the USA who grew up speaking English.

I would never buy a computer from someone on eBay. Much easier to take my money and burn it in the fireplace. I buy from HP or Lenovo direct or Tigerdirect or Newegg or other top tier resellers with excellent records and low prices.

I have bought five laptops on eBay, all IBM/Lenovo and have not had a problem. I buy only laptops with factory warranties and I have needed them. The problems have not been normal laptop failures and not the condition at the time of sale. Lenove has great warranty service.

Yes they do. I had a hardware issue once, and called tech support. They FedEx a prepaid overnight box which "floated" the laptop inside. Had the laptop fixed and overnighted back to me in three days. No charge.

64 vs 32 bit refers to the processor. In other words the gizmo that runs software. That means it has nothing to do with how data is stored but program that runs on one may not run on another.

And the bus. The difference is the same as a 32 lane highway vs a 64 lane highway.

Some older 32 bit programs will NOT work on a 64 bit machine. Roxio for instance. Even with its alleged 64 bit fix.

Some software developed for a 2 bit OS is may be a challenge on 64 bit. That will only be a very few though.

Would also be a challenge for 32 bit.
