Our last trip was in late May and we saw 11 black bears in different places on the AK highway in one day - so you don't necessarily have to go to Hyder to see them. We are heading there again this year and hope to have the same luck.

Most of the bears seen along the Cassiar Hwy (Hwy 37) in B.C. are black bears. On a June drive from Meziadin Junction to Stewart we saw nine black bears in a 40 mile stretch.
At the Fish Creek bear viewing platform in September 2007 we saw this grizzly ...

This grizzly was strolling along the Alaska Highway alongside Kluane Lake in Yukon, near Congdon Creek Yukon Gov't campground ... we often see brown bears in this area.

Last summer, we saw more bears, between Watson Lake and Fort Nelson than any other place. The last time we stopped in Hyder, we saw one black up at the viewing platform and he was just leaving to go home for the night.
Here is a cinnamon phase of a black bear. You can tell by the length of his ears and the straight line between the tip of his nose and the top of his head. Sue's brown bear, has the shorter round ears, barely going above the top of his head and they have a concaved face, more dog like in contour or at least like my beagle dog. LOL

The same day we also saw this herd of black bears, a sow and triplets.

We live in Kenai Alaska and there are bears around all year, just not as much in the winter. Even though we are currently having one of the coldest and snowiest winters here in the southwest areas in about 30 yrs, the bears occasionally come out. We are docked for the last 6 months at the Diamond M Ranch, and the last bear around here, at the rv park was in October. They will be out more frequently once the salmon run starts in a few months.
When we lived in the bush area, the arctic circle, every so often polar bears would wander into town. It really was a sight to see.
Honestly wherever you wind up in AK, you have a good possibility of seeing bears. You will always see moose around on a constant basis. We are very accustomed to opening our trailer door to find a moose standing right outside the trailer.
