Have you tried rebooting? It sounds like you may have a rogue copy of FF running in the background.

Is there anyway to disable Avast without completely uninstalling it just to check if it is causing a problem with Firefox?

You can see if this still works. Right-click on Avast tray icon, and select Shield Controls. Look for the option to disable for 10 minutes.
Then try restarting Firefox.

If you press Control Alt and Delete all at the same time one time, it will open the task manager. look through the list of running programs, and if you see Firefox, highlight it and select close. You should now be able to start firefox.

System restore is not the answer!

You should be able to start up firefox and Avast should ask if this program is trusted, if it does not reinstall firefox and it should work without an issue.

If you got an old version of Avast then you can select or set which programs are trusted by opening the interface, though I've forgotten how to set them as they removed that feature last year.

To stop AVAST' real time shield right click the Icon in your program tray (bottom right corner of the screen) open avast, real time shield, disable.

Hi...this works for me whenever I install something that seems to backfire...go to your 'System Restore' function in your "system tools' and follow the instructions...you should be able to restore your system to a previous date of your choosing...good luck and drive safe....Bob

I have the Avast program and firefox. I have the subscription plan, not the free one. When I did have the free program, I had no problems. Check your firewall settings.

I've had Avast and Firefox running together for over 3 years now.

Both Avast and Firefox contact me when they have an upgrade and ask if I want to download.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Sorry to be so long getting back, I had an appointment at the tire shop and also forgot that I have to get out of a particular thread then back into it to see any updates. Never have been able to find out why I can't just set in one site and see all the responses as they appear.

Anyway, I did a re-boot and was able to get into firefox now. Also, for future references, I can do Start, type in Run, then in the box I typed Firefox.exe and got to firefox that way. Several ways to skin a cat.

Now my Windows Mail is giving me an error message, don't know where that comes from. This last couple of weeks have had more problems than I've had in the last 4 years using this laptop. Really getting to be a hair-pulling experience (oh no, forgot, I don't have enough hair to do any pulling).

Thanks guys, for all the responses.

If you right click on the Avast icon in the system tray (lower right side of your screen), you can temporarily disable Avast if you want to troubleshoot without it running. After you right click, choose Avast shields control, then choose how long you want to disable Avast.

What are your routine clean ups? How often do you run them?
