Ok heading to Slash X this weekend and was wondering if there was a good spot to camp to reduce the wind factor. Looks like we may get some. Anyone??????

If your coming in of of Stoddard Wells road and you come to that large opening on your left where most people stage from just go a little further up that road you'll see a dozen places to stage out of that well keep you out of some of that cold wind.

That wind up there can turn on you so fast and just come out of nowhere. I remember one time we went to johnson valley for the weekend with a single cab flatbed truck and two quads and an ATC. We got there about 11 pm on a friday night in the middle of winter, and it had to be blowing a solid 40 gusting about 70. We tried to set up a tent in that weather, not much success. My buddy had the nice warm cab of the truck to himself, my wife and I put our sleeping bags in the "wind tunnel"(tent) and froze our asses off for two nights... what a weekend to forget...I used to ride up there quite a bit and actually made it to slash x one time, we ended up getting off the 15 at stoddard wells road and going east about 4 miles or so. Camped somewhere on the left side, but no wind protection there. Hopefully you aren't tent camping!

look for some big rocks. Oh wait, there aren't any at Slash X.
It's the desert, it's windy, get used to it. That's why we have toy haulers.

Can't think of anything to really break it up easily accessible. . We're headed to J valley but we should be fine. Rig is so heavy, has hydraulic jacks it doesn't move at all.

Actually there are, if you keep south east on the 247 about 5-6mi (could be a little further never clocked it)past slash X there is a road to your right that will take you to a rock climbing area. Bout the only place I like riding to out there.

Thanks guys.
We camped off Stoddard Wells road off 247 1/4 mile north of Slash X with 3 other groups. All open of course. Had some friends sleeping in thier van and a tent. It was 21 degress Sat AM when we got up just before sunrise and we had to shake the tent and van in the morning to make sure they were still alive. Man it was cold. Thank god for toy haulers with heaters.
No wind till Sunday and Monday but it was doable. Just dang cold riding is all. We did fine a spot while riding about a 1/2 mile south of us off 247 across the street that probably has the smoothest dirt road access and camping area I have ever seen out there. It has some table top type berms about 6' tall that we may try to camp at next time. It was less windy standing behind the berms than on top of them. Probably try that next time. Good times.
