For this summer, looking at the map. Does anyone know anything about Canadian Highway 40, from Hinton thru Grande Cache to Grand Prairie? Road any good or stay off it? Thanks, Don

Nice highway during the travel season, close to some mountains, paved lots of wildlife. All in all a pleasant quiet drive to Grande Prairie.

WE second that opinion. #40 is a great road.

Scenic though.

We travelled it in Sept. Grande Cache to Grande Prairie really good.
Hinton to Grande Cache is an older road that is being upgraded in sections. None of the upgrading interfered with travel, mostly adding shoulders. Enjoyed the drive. No reason to avoid.

Highway 40 is one of our favorite roads. Lots of wildlife, especially deer along the way. One trip we counted cars we met and deer we saw, and the deer won by a 2 to 1 margin. We usually stop at Grande Cache for a meal, to do some shopping and just mess around. It is just a nice small town, clean, well kept, lots of pride showing from the citizens. Plus the town runs a real nice campground, just on the NE edge of town, 5 or 6 blocks off the highway. Full hookups or partial if wanted. We stayed there last summer on the way back from Alaska, had a nice camp fire, no bugs that night, good clean showers, just a great place to camp.
As mentioned there is some road construction on the southern end of hwy 40 but not a problem. Here is a section not too far from Grand Cache. Also watch out for logging trucks on the road. We found the drivers to be very courteous but the loads are long and stick out the back a ways.

The KOA campground, just west of Hinton is very nice if a person needs to spend a night. One of the nicest where we have ever stayed. It is not too far from Jasper and the Park.

Let's be picky - it's an Alberta highway, not an national one. The fact that you specified the towns in the text narrows it down, but the subject line remains ambiguous.

The last trip up North we went that way, we spent a few nights at Mount Robson Provincial Park in BC. We then took most of a day driving from Mount Robson the Grande Cache, which if completed with out any stops is “about” a 4 hr drive. We then stayed over night in the campsite run by the town of Grande Cache which was cozy, great and inexpensive . We spent the night and early the next morning got up and had a nice leisurely drive to Grande Prairie. The road, a few years back was great and has some has beautiful scenery.

Also took Highway 40 from Hinton to Grand Prairie. It is a nice drive. I had also asked the same question a couple of years ago and someone, don't remember who, told me to Google Earth it and check out the street view. Got a real good look at it and also did the same for a lot of the Alaskan Highway. It is just another way of getting a look. It might not be this years view but it still gives you an idea.
