We are headed for Tofino in the next couple of weeks.

As expected there are not many campsites open in the winter.

There are a few provincial parks open that we plan to check out but nothing in Tofino.

We are looking for places to boondock or low rate places.

Got any favorite spots you are willing to share?

thanks

Try Island West Resort in Ucuelet. Its right next to the marina, great view, however sheltered from the Pacific winds. We prefer Ucuelet over Tofino, wonderful trails next to town. Its about 30 minutes to Tofino, 15 mins. to National Park.

They are open and offer winter rates.

Not many boondock spots ... we looked hard each time we visited (annually) when we lived on Vancouver Island.

Crystal Cove has campsites open year-round, but in all honesty I much prefer their beachfront cabins with hot tubs.

If I were to camp in winter, I think Bella Pacifica would be my choice.

Campsite fees are expensive year-round.

Just to tease you, this was the view from the hot tub on the deck of the cabin we stayed at one March ...

It might depend on the snow cover on the road in..Torquart Bay is simply...the best.

You would really need to make some phone calls to see if it is open.

Torquart is the best! Been going there regularly once or twice a year. The road in is really rough lately and the campground has not been maintained at all in the last several years. We take the TC and a boat in there instead of the 5er. Don't expect any amenities, that includes fresh water. However if one loves clams, oysters, dungeness crab, prawns and most local varieties of fish in season, its a fantastic place. At low tide, there are spots you can't walk on the sea-bed, there are s-o-o-o many oysters. Short of oyster picking the other food gathering does require some knowledge and equipment to be successful.

Garry is right, its a great place, however it does bring a different slant to boondocking.

I'd be careful about Toquart Bay right now. A couple of our recent, more-nasty, winter storms did some serious damage out there. A number of the water-side spots are missing large amounts of sand, mostly around the the firepits, but in one case, the picnic table was undermined as well. Lots of debris in the campsite too. And I don't think the hosts are there at the moment either.

The road in isn't too bad right now. Was out that way just before Christmas and the road was in decent shape, not too many potholes.

As for in-town stuff, not much is open. Ucluelet Campground is closed, Surf Junction is closed, not sure about Island West, but I suspect it might be closed right now as well. You could try Wya campground, I think they are open. Otherwise, you'd be looking at places around Tofino.

Cheers!
Mike
