Hello! I have a question here. My husband called for info on a gate guard position in south Texas. He was told you have to go to Texas and apply for job then pay for security clearance THEN be put on a waiting list for an open gate. How long is this waiting list? I dont hear others talk about this. What do you do in the mean time?

Em... here is your first warning sign "Pay for a clearance".
I've had security clearances for three jobs, real clearances done by the FBI. In all three cases the EMPLOYER paid for the research, not the EMPLOYEE.
I smell a scam.

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

I smell a scam. Nope, not really. All of the gate guard companies used to pay for the background and license, until they got over run with those that would work a week and decide it was not for them and leave or let one company pay and then switch to another company. Now days, most will NOT pay for the license and required testing, prints, drug test or state test. They figure if you are willing to foot the bill, you will probably stick around for awhile. IMO, I think that is fair and see no problem with it.

Additionally, you are an independent contractor (for the most part) paying for your state security LICENSE, which will follow you to any other job in Texas. Its what is now normal within this industry.
To the OP's original question; sorry to say, it all depends- the wait may be a day or it may be 3 weeks. The energy companies themselves don't necessarily give the gate guard companies more than a day or two notice for a new gate; just- have someone here at this location tomorrow. GGS will let you hook up in their yard in Whitsett, maybe elsewhere (we don't work for them, can't tell you for sure). Other companies will just expect you to be within reasonable driving distance when they call you.
Who are you signing on with? You can always boondock in Walmart parking lots until they call you- many do.

Gate Guard Services sent us a package of paperwork with all the tests, fingerprint cards, contract, license app etc. and we got all filled out and returned to them in the mail.
This all happened in September and when we got to Texas in late October we notified them and they had us stay at their yard in Corrizo Springs (full hook ups, for free). Was there 2 nights before deploying and have been on the same gate since.
I heard in december that they were not taking new application but have now heard they have been hiring again.
Seems to be plenty of work down here with no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

There are some that have songle person hours, i.e. they are open from 7AM to &PM pay is less than a 24 hr gate, tho. Just curious, you really want to be away from the DW for a signicant time, when she could join you for the full time gates? Check out myoldrv.com both blog and forums for more info. Tell Andy Loyd sent you!
