It means that you need to check the error code with a scan tool. Most auto parts stores will do it for free. Look up the code and go from there.

IT could be just a loose fuel cap, or oxygen sensors. You need a code reader to accurately check out your problem. As stated, SOME parts store will read the codes, but a dealer will want $ 100 bucks to check it out. ( parts not included)

In my opinion the auto. dash lights on newer vehicles are intended to generate service work for the many dealers in the country. I have a friend that can't do any thing to his honda, every time the check engine light comes on he runs to the dealer, 300 to 500 $$$ later the light is off and he is happy again.

My light came on in my V10 and the Ford Dealer wanted $100 to check it. Talked to some Guy who told me to diconnect my battery then reconnect it. The light stayed off for the next three years before I sold it. Had it smogged several times during this time in Calif

Is it (service engine soon) or (check engine)? Sometimes the "service" means just that and the light can be reset via owners manual instructions. No error codes involved since it's just a reminder to have oil changed, etc......Just thinking.....I could be outta line.

After having my check engine light come on and no nearby access to a free code reading, I decided to never find myself in that position again. I now run an UltraGuage on my Ford V10 fulltime. I am very satisfied with the unit.

Scan tools are cheap (example)

Buy one.

It might be something really cheap, like you need to add antifreeze, check the gas-cap, oil-change, etc. It might be something really expensive.

If the light is FLASHING get it checked out, in fact it might die before you get to the closest service.

I have had a tool for years (and I'm not a gear-head), but it has saved me much time and effort. Antifreeze, MAF sensor, O2 sensor, etc. It has also sent me to professional service when needed (fouled injectors)

Never, ever drive around, for years, with an unknown problem, it might be trival, it might NOT

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.
