FWIW...I would NEVER have a mexican dentist do an implant knowing the lack of safety requirements. Implants involve drilling into bone and screwing a titanium insert into bone...often requireing added bone to give full seating. I was given the choice of harvesting my own bone...cow bone ..or cadaver irradiated bone. I had to sign a release if using anything other then my own bone absolving everyone from liability of contraction of hep-c or aids from the supplied bone. I was also advised that there is a small chance of rejection of the implant by the body. Wht chance somthing that delicate from someone not governed by regulation for safety???? Also remember implants are a long process...6 month wait after the procedure...the surgery to expose the implant...wait a few weeks to heal...dentist to make impressions...wait....then fir crown. Lastly I get the feeling you are looking to save money since to me the chance of failure is greater down there then here simply because of lack of standards...JMHO

Again, I appreciate everyone has an opinion about whether or not Mexican dentists are any good or safe.

Here is a quote from an email I received today from a friend who is a retired dentist from the NE U.S. By the way he has had two crowns done in Progreso.

"My thoughts on dental implants done in Mexico:

1. As with any dental work done in Mexico, it is important to chose a qualified dentist. Once the procedure is learned well and performed many times (experience), I’m sure there is no difference between dentists from this country or dentists in Mexico.
2. The materials for implants usually come from the same companies that are used in the USA and around the world. But it’s worth questioning what is the material and what company makes them. When I was working and staying on top of the dental knowledge, titanium was the material of choice.
3. I have a close friend who lives in Tucson who is seeing a dentist in Nogales for an implant. And so far he is quite pleased. Especially with the cost!!!

In conclusion, the hardest part is finding a Mexican dentist who is qualified and who you have confidence in doing a good job."

I am also aware of what is involved with an implant as I already have one.

I had some fillings done in Progreso last year. In an RV park, I mentioned Mexican dentists to a woman I "know" from an an online forum for owners of our type of motorhome, and she said she has implants done by Ricardo Carreon in Progreso and is very happy with them. She said her snowbird friends go to him, too, but didn't say if they also have implants. As I said, she's an online acquaintance so she could be the biggest liar in the world for all I know, but she didn't strike me that way.

I also know of a non-RV guy (friend of a friend) who travels from Austin to have his dental work done by Dr. Mustre, but he's had only crowns and root canals--no implants.

You said you've been to Progreso twice now and feel safe. Are you in the RGV now? If so, right about now is when the snowbirds really descend on the place and if you start asking around in any RV park you should be able to get a lot of information on implants in Progreso.

Thanks much for the response. We have heard good things about Carreon as well but nothing about implants. We are in RGV and will be here a couple of months.

Have you been to progresso lately?

It isn't the same and lots of places that were open are now closed.

I am making plans now to go to Progreso, Mexico, for dental implants. Many snow birds who spend winter in the Texas valley have their work done there. I have friends who have had implants done there and have never had a problem. The reason I am choosing to go to Mexico to have the work done is because the specialist my dentist sent me to wants $3300 for one front tooth. That doesn't include four others. Quite frankly I'm choosing Mexico because I can't afford to have the work done in the U.S.

The plan is to use a Dr. Ruth Acosta - the one who did the implants for our friend. We have not yet called her. We are meeting with our friend on Tuesday evening for dinner to get information before we make contact.

If you think the price of having work done correctly by a Dentist in the U.S.is expensive wait til you see what it costs to correct the mistakes they can make in a 3rd world country. My dentist of 20 years has warned me about going there. I trust him. Much of the work he has seen is of a temporary nature and costs more to correct than than getting it done right to start with. I have no plans to go there.

Like many others, I would like to have the procedures done in the USA - to keep the money in our own country. I wish we had that kind of money, but we don't. $4000 per implant multiplied by the number I need would cost us in the US about $24,000. Insurance doesn't pay a dime on it. I don't have it. Sorry. And I'm not ready to give up the good teeth I have left and get plates.

Thus far none of the folks that we know who have had work done in Progreso have had issues. Some of the dentists are US citizens, been educated in the US, live in Texas, but have dental offices across the border.

I am a kidney transplant patient, take multiple anti-rejection medications at very high cost even after insurance, have had to get permission to have the work done from the transplant staff, am following recommendations as to where to go and who to use, am playing this as safely as possible. I realize I'm going to have to be a "big" girl about this because sedation is not used in Mexico in the process. But sometimes in life we have to make choices and do the best we can as individuals. Sometimes those choices don't match up with what others believe to be "the best" action to take. All I can do is paddle my own canoe.
