If that's the road from Indy to Denver through St Joseph (?), the answer is no except in places but a very pleasant drive.

The drive from Hannibal to St Joseph is one of the nicest roads to drive on in that part of the country (IMHO) We discovered it a number of years ago on one of our many trips to Colorado -- the only part of of Rt 36 that I recall as being a slight challenge would be the first 50 miles or so when you enter Colorado - not many people on the road and it is just a pleasant drive through the Middle of America.
If I recall the first half of Missouri is dual lane and very easy drive -- not totally limited access and very little heavy traffic.
Enjoy the drive,
and Merry Christmas,

We drove route 36 across east bound from St. Joseph to Hannibal back in 2010. A very pleasant drive on a divided highway. Light traffic.
Route 36 was an older 2-lane and recently had a new parallel 2-lane added to make it a divided highway. The older road had less cut and fill to smooth the drive over the rolling hills. Some of the eastbound sections were the new road and some of the westbound sections were new.
Here's a picture.

We were across Mo. on US 36 just last month. What a relief! After driving on I-70, our experience was nothing short of easy. The road is 4 lanes all the way from Hannibal to St. Joseph, and though I'm sure Mo. considers the road limited access (not freeway), there are grade level crossings. In the more populated areas, there are overpasses and on/off ramps.
I won't take I70 across MO again when I can use US 36 instead. Neither of us recall a traffic light on the route in MO, and traffic was very light until we got close to St. Joseph... we were westbound.

When we travel cross country, we like to pick a number and follow it as far as we can. We've done US #'s 2, 50, 82, and 90. Sounds like this US 36 needs to be on the list.
