It can be3 done that way.... I considered it in fact.

I have the design software lying about but for assorted reasons (mostly looks) choose to use the genuine article.

I do have one park where I'm seriously considering home brewing one yet though.

I built my own for about $6 in material off plans for DTV ant. on the web, replaced the whole wingman head,I was getting 2 channels at my fav.camp spot I now get 15-22 depending on the site,I used 2"square PVC tube&heavy copper wire for the wiskers & I get that many channels UNamplified

I did the same thing when the booster went out on our old 5ver.
Got 17 CLEAR stations(no digital fade) at a campsite I normally got only 6 with constant fade when in use. I used a wood back with PVC tubing to insulate with left over copper wire I had from some electrical jobs I had done. COST = O.
Mine looked a lot like this and I kept it in a cabinet so no one ever saw it while it was in use.

If I hadn't tried it myself; I'd have never believed it.

I went from the Winegaurd to the Jack. Jack mounts on the same up/down Winegaurd "mast". I like the Jack better than the Winegaurd it replaced for two reasons.
1) It pulls in more channels.
2) It doesn't seem to be anywhere near as sensitive to direction ... meaning I almost never have to rotate it except for the most weakest of signals.
Again, takes longer to climb the ladder than do the install.

X2 . . . I had great results with my Jack Antenna and a digital==>analog converter. As previously stated - it's not nearly as directional as I expected. You can generally find them for $40 (incl. tax, title, license and shipping).

The first one I built looked very similar to woodburner's version, the problem is the wood gets wet and the wires are basicly hooked together resulting in a poor signal (over time)the PVC doesn't do that, and I dont bother adding the reflector(screen material in pic)people have approached me interested in if/how it works, when I tell them it cost less than $6 they tell me I should whip up a few & sell them

Update...At one of our favorite camping spots with the Wingman installed and operating. We picked up one additional channel and the two that we used to get here appear to be stronger, so although we are still missing two local stations, overall it was worth the $29. Also, as everyone said, it is very easy to install! Thanks for all of the feedback as always.

Keep in mind that Woodburner's antenna is designed for UHF reception only. There are still several hundred digital stations broadcasting on VHF, as well as many low power repeaters that may be broadcasting either analog or digital signals on VHF.
