Robertryan, the acceptable standards for vehicle emissions vary from continent to continent but I think it would be difficult to take a position that one modern Western society has better standards than another.

For example, in Europe the emphasis may be on reducing CO2 emissions, but it can be argued that CO2 is NOT a pollutant. It is an essential and important natural gas found in our atmosphere, even though it is also known as a greenhouse gas.

In North America the emphasis has been on eliminating diesel engine emissions of soot (Carbon) and NOx, which are both air pollutants. However, eliminating NOx and soot increases CO2 emissions, so there is a tradeoff.

So a North American diesel engine using exhaust gas recirculation and a DPF might not meet European CO2 standards, while a European engine oriented for lower CO2 might not meet North American soot and NOx standards.

Whichever approach you prefer to favour, all modern diesel engines in Europe and North America have amazingly low emissions compared with even 2 decades ago. We should be happy with that.

That is my point exactly. How people can say they are "dirty "is beyond me. Still from the point of the manufacturer, it is frustrating needing to conform to differing regulations.
