Would anyone advise the road conditions on route 17. Are there many grades and if so how steep.

You will be going from the valley into the mountains, thus there are some hills to climb, but most of the way it is a slow steady climb into Flagstaff.
As you will be going into a snow area, with sudden storms, check road conditions prior to your travel.

There is a grade starting at Black Canyon city for about 4 miles to Sunset Point of 6-7%. A downgrade of 7% dropping into the Verde Valley about 2-2-1/2 miles. From the Verde Valley north there is an 11 mile climb of 5-6% grades.
The roads are clear for the most part but there may be patches of ice from the Stoneman Lake turnoff, exit 306, north to Flagstaff.

17 is a relatively easy freeway drive with the grades mentioned above. You will be steadily going up about 6,000 feet. Check www.az511.com for the road condition, or dial 511 in Arizona.

x2 what Janss (should know - living in Sedona!) and others have said. Good interstate road with some curves and some pretty serious grades. Have done it many times.

There are no grades steeper than 6%. From the Verde to the top of the rim it is a steady pull up. Right now it is snowing and 17 gets slicker than a greased pig. Slowing down and driving cautiously usually works. The problem is, there are those that will not slow down and end up wrecked and causing wrecks until D.P.S. gets all they can handle and then they close the road.
Then no one moves; and this goes on for hours before the road is re-opened. Jack.

The only time I worry about steep grades is on two lane roads where people can't pass me. All freeways are worry free.
