In Rawlins, check out the Wyoming Frontier Prison. A nice side trip would be to swing off to the south and visit Saratoga. From there you can easily travel over the Snowy Range Mountains and rejoin I-80 at Laramie.

Also in Rawlins is the former Wyoming State Prison. It was still in use into the '80s. Interesting tour.

Yep, thats where we lost our first 5er, just west of the top of Elk Mtn between ext 255 & ext 260. Pay your respects as you go by.

Snowy range is a beautiful area for a "side drive". Near Centennial and Laramie.

If you can go without hookups I would highly recommend Vedauwoo campground in the Medicine Bow National Forest. Easy off and easy on to I-80 and wonderfully quiet. I understand it was popular with outlaws and such back in the day. I also liked Firefighter's Memorial cg in Flaming Gorge NRA but might be too far off the interstate for you unless you take the Colorado route. If so, than take a look at Routt NF's Hahns Peak Lake cg and the others around Steamboat Springs, CO. Check www.forestcamping.com for particulars about them.
