We currently have a notebook computer that we need to upgrade. We are fulltimers so we travel a lot. I like the idea of a desktop as you can get more computer for less money. The notebook is more portable. The desk we use for the computer is the one located behind the passenger seat that we put down each time we move. We don't have a built in desk. Which would you recommend?

If you have a desktop how do you lock down the tower when you are moving? Or is this a problem?

Any help is appreciated.

And to further confuse you; there are PCs built into the monitor, so all you have is the display and a keyboard.

We did the tower under the dinette once. Its ok but it takes up more space.

You can get a lot of laptop for $500.

I would recommend the notebook. As you mentioned, it is portable and easy to stow. With a desktop, you have to secure the tower, as well as the monitor, the keyboard and mouse. You will have cables, at least from tower to monitor, and likely some speakers as well.

Add up the expense of the tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and webcam - not too far off from a notebook now.

Although you can get more computer for your money with a desktop, do you need that extra horsepower?

If you currently have a desktop how do you secure it during travel? Do you have built in or what?

I use a laptop but I still can put it on a desk. The inside is even made to bang around a little.

We have an IMac where the computer and monitor are all one. We just lay it down on the couch when we move and secure it under the pillows.

It used to be that you got more computer with the Desk top system, but those days are over....you can get more than enough with a mid-priced Laptop, and you can stow it safely when you are traveling down the road.

Also allows DW to put it on her lap while you are driving, to do some research on places to stop or visit.....something you probably wouldn't be able to do with the Desktop.

As far as how do you secure a desk top? Well, I'm working on a tugboat, and I am using a desktop. I've got a bungee cord holding the computer to the wall, and screwed the base of the monitor to the desk. The keyboard is stuck behind the monitor when I'm not using it.
I plan to buy myself a laptop for Christmas...I want the webcam feature, so that I can Skype with our Grandson, while I'm at work. Plus, the new laptop will have about twice the memory and HD space that this 8 year old desktop unit has!

Another thing to mention....power surges! The laptop has less chance of being effected by the issues of power, than the desktop, which is plugged into the 110VAC, and doesn't have the converter/battery acting as a bit of a buffer.

Go with the laptop!
