I use an outside water filter so I don't put one in the housing inside. Every year I remove it, dump the water & let it fill with a quart (or whatever) of antifreeze. Can I just remove the housing & thread on a PVC cap permanently?

Generally in the case of a whole house filtration system, the water must pass through the canister to reach the rest of the RV, whether it comes from the city water connection or the FW tank. Simply capping it would result in no water anywhere. It should be fairly easy to simply remove the canister and associated hardware then plumb a piece of pipe across the now vacant opening in the plumbing.

You would have to disconnect the inlet and outlet lines and istall a brass nipple in place of the filter housing. Or you can do what I did and make a filter bypass.

I've heard people just fill the canister with marbles.

I take an empty plastic water bottle (with cap) and stick it in my filter canister...

The plastic bottle works well just fill it up with water first. Mine just crushed in on itself when I put it in empty.
It only saves you a dollar so it might not even be worth it.

What I mean by capping it is threading a PVC cap where the canister would normally thread on. It doesn't restrict water flow at all. Basically it would be a 1" deep canister instead of a 10" deep canister. Make sense? It's not a matter of saving that amount of antifreeze, it's a matter of not removing/replacing twice a year since I don't install a filter.

Suggested this to my SIL for his Rockwood and he read the reviews. All bad. Just used more AF for winterizing. They don't drink the tank water anyway.
