I hoped this topic would bring out some out-of-the-box thinking.

It seems to have done that. After reading the posts so far, the following occur to me.

The nosayers point to the need to frequently adjust the controller. If it is properly adjusted, why does it neeed adjusting? I suspect that only a few people would have the expertise to do realtime adjustments any way and would likely screw things up.

They also point to the need to manally control the brakes in an emergency. Not sure what kind of emergency you are referring to. When was that last time you heard of a TV brake failure, while towing, and in a situation where the trailer could make much difference. I have never heard of an instance.

Many of the braking system for a towed car (behind a motorhome) are controlled solely by a controller in the towed vehicle. They work fine

Thanks for the Tekonsha suggestion from TMMull! That looks like a nice solution.

So.. I think:
The Tekonsha solution looks interesting.

The Brakes could be powered by the trailer battery so I can loan it to friends, use it on alternater TVs, etc. and the TV would not need to have +12v run back to the trailer.

I would not have to depend on the expertise of the user to properly adjust the brakes.

I like the surge brake idea. Its pretty pricey, but still maybe feasible.

Adjustments may be necessary for road conditions, wet, dry, snow, wind, open highway, town, mountains. To many varibales to list that might make you want to make minor adjustments. Changes are easy to make, no rocket sicence here, my wife and daughter can easily make changes. Just turn a knob to increase or decrease braking.

Twice on mt TPTV I had to use mine to control sway after deing passed by a big rig or in windy conditions, this is somewhat common with TP's and I'm sure others have had to do it more than I have. Ever seen a big rig jack knifeing the trailer tires will usually be smoking while the tractor will not, theyare trying to add drag to ket the tractor catch up with the trailer. You big rig drivers feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Sometimes trying to power out of a swaying trailer will just make it worse, sometimes adding drag to the TV will controll the sway. You need to have both available. There is no 100% proven way to correct trailer sway once it starts. I prefer to have as many options as I can get. Sway bars, brake controlers, and power gives you more reduncy.

Towed cars are mostly towed 4 wheels on the ground or on tow dollys. The wheels are at the ends of the cars not in the middle, not as much chance for sway. a whole different set of physics in action with a car compared to a trailer.

Many states have certin requirements for brakes on trailers. If your not in controll of your trailer brakes and have an accident you could probably kiss you insurance good by.

I doubt you'll have many different vehicles towing your rig the adapter harnesses are fairly cheap buy one for each.

One thing not mentioned yet:
I test my brakes every time I tow by manually activating just the trailer brakes. This way I know that the controller, wiring, and brakes are working.

and how would you run all the wires to the controller (ie the power wire the brake switch wire and so on all these wires need to come from the tv and how on earth would you use the manual slide switch on the controller if you needed to apply just the trailer brakes. a very bad idea in my opinion
