Son started out on his 330 Trailboss. While getting ready to ride, I noticed his quad was shooting oil everywhere. He forgot to put the dipstick cap back on. Didn't have enough oil to fill it up for the ride, so he got on the wifes 550xp. Everything was fine, cept it started to smoke on the up hills. Lightly at first, but we were far away from camp when I realized it was getting worse. Finally got to a spot to check and found the stupid freaking air filter was not on right. Put it on, and on the way back to camp, the smoke went away. After some investigation, notice the smoke went away because it burned all the oil off. I'm guessing dirt got in and scoured the cylinder walls. She's done for. Smokes like a second rate strip club at 1am now. I remember putting the filter in properly. I have been doing it for nearly 2000 miles now. Last trip the 550XP took was up to Wyoming with my wifes family while I did not go. All I can think is they checked the filter and didn't put it on right.
Then to put some icing on the cake, same son took his 330 through a puddle, and freaked out about halfway and shut it off. Would not start up again. Battery is shot, stator does not work and I don't know what else is broke.
RZR ran like a champ. Got some good vid of it getting stuck in a 4ft mud hole, then vid of me trying to clean it up in some mean water puddles.
Wonder how much it cost to rebuild a 550XP motor?

Tough luck. I'd ask a few Polaris shops but it's kinda hard to say not knowing what happened inside the engines and you won't know that till its torn down. Years ago I used to take all my small engines to the local community college small engine class. They did really good work and only charged a small fee plus parts. I don't know about where you're at but that might be an idea to check out. These toys are rather expensive to fix compared to cars relative to their size and lack of complexity.

Sorry to hear your troubles.
Had an old VW baja bug that would get an extra 4-5 HP by not running the air filter. Replaced cyl and rings on that many times.
You might be lucky in the fact that most new units have plated cylinders and the rings are the soft parts. You might get away with a re-ring. -Small motor and not terribly difficult.
Coffee (no beer if you want a good job), rings, gaskets and parts cleaner + a day!

Ohh man!! Sorry to hear that. Guess my TH heater not working is small pickins compared to all that. Sheesh, That 550 would be worth fixing. The 330 sounds easy. Drop whatever is left in the 330 and replace the oil and filter, and spark plug.

That sucks Mav, we took the new RZR 4 out this weekend above Central City/Idaho Springs and I must admit the RZR 4 performed way above my expectations, thought it would re-shape a lot of rocks if you know what I mean because of the wheelbase.

Polaris had nothing to do with the problems this weekend.
Started my research on the fixes. I'm in no hurry as of yet.

Air filter is fine. That design has been working fine in thousands of 550XP quads. Have read about a few 850XPs having this issue, and some of the older RZRs, but never a 550xp.

After some troubleshooting tonight with a friend, the ECM of the Trailboss is shot. $150 part. Also the starter will not engage. Seperate problem I think. We'll see.
Gonna get ahold of the dealer tomorrow to see if they know someone that can bore the cylinder of the 550 and we will just put .030 over rings on it. Maybe.
