The refer we are considering is a 10cu.ft Whirlpool from Lowe's. It has cooling fins up the rear of the cabinet and is cooled by convection. Should this refer be sealed all around the cabinet on the inside and the existing roof and side door vents left in place? The coils will then be cooled by convection as the old absorption coils were cooled.
Now consider the Magic Chef at Home Depot. It has coils embedded in a gray plastic like stuff and is flush with the rear of the cabinet. Would the same install procedure be OK?
What about space around the refer. Zero clearance OK? Thanks.

Look at the owner's manual for the refirgerators you are considering. They will tell you the installation requirements.

I would leave the roof vent intact, it makes a great place for the heat to escape. So no fan at all? I hadn't seen that yet but I guess they're getting so efficient they don't need one?

Yes also on the vents, I also think you should read the reviews on both.

Jerry B, go to the Magic Chef website and put in the model number. It should give you the installation instructions and owners manual. In there somewhere will be be specs and will include clearances required. I have a Whirlpool all electric in my monaco and it has the enclosed back. These models get there air from the front grill, pass it over the coils underneath and exhaust it back out the front. I would think the one with the exposed coils would need more clearance than the enclosed back model.

Here is my magic chef 10cu' install in our coach, everything went through the side door with room to spare, used bulb insulation at top and bottom of frige to seal out unwanted air. Easy and works great since 2006. Love it.

that fridge looks like my 8cuft Avanti
we love our electric fridge
ours has the the coils in the sides, at least it feels that way, the sides get warm, the back is flat no exposed coils
I thought about trying to squeeze in a 10cuFt, but since i was doing all the work myself, i settled on the easier install of the 8CuFt

Bill,
That's a slick installation. Looks factory original. I may do what you have done when my 13 year old Dometic side by side gives up the ghost. Door seals are already worn out, so it needs replacing. A residential sure beats 4k for another Dometic.
Did you have to change your inverter or add batteries when you made the change? Some have posted earlier they just leave the unit off while travling and it maintains temperature. Since we run our gen set most of the time while underway, I don't think it would be an issue for me.

I have the whirlpool and left my roof vent in tact.
Only real advice I can give is while you have it out take some killz and seal all the wood. I had a bit of a mold issue with unsealed wood. Sprayed with mold killer and sealed it.
Also, if you are even thinking about installing solar run the wire while you have it out. Makes it easy to tack everything down.
Refrigerator goes through the side door no problem.
