We currently use a "pay as you go" cell phone from Rogers. Here at home, it works well and costs us very little. But we are planning a trip to florida in the fall and the roaming fees are pretty high, $2.00 per minute. We would like to be able to use this cell phone for making reservations at campgrounds on the way down and home, possibly a few call home to "check in" with the family, and receive a phone call from our golf cart rental guy.

What does everyone suggest? Can we pick up a cheap prepaid phone at Walmart when we cross the border? Would this phone then have long distance rates if it has a NY phone number and being used in FL?

need some help on this one - we are cell phone newbies.

Page Plus

Look at the coverage map...

Look at the phones...

Pick an area code you prefer and get the phone activated with a new number...

Purchase the number of minutes that you want.

Low usage is like 10 cents a minute...and it goes down to around 6 cents a minute for larger allotments of time.

The minutes stay good for 120 days...at which point, if you add minutes...they all rollover.

We keep a spare phone in our RV on the Page Plus Network (verizon towers)...and it's economical.

I have an automatic $10 refill every 120 days from

Prepaid Online

They sent me a pin every 120 days so I don't forget and loose my rollover minutes.

There are many good plans out there.

All calling within the US...local or long distance is calculated at the same rate...so you really don't have to worry about calling another state, or whatever, on the road...

When work took me north, a lot, I looked into Rogers Prepay, several co-workers actually got phones.

I use T-Mobile pre-pay here. It might bare looking into, if you use the phone "lightly". What you bought was probably TRAC (or the other company owned by them) and no, there is no charge beyond your "rate"

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

.

Tracfone offers same per minute rate to call anywhere in the US and to make calls back to Canada. About 10 cents per min depending on how many minutes one purchases. You can also set up a local Canadian phone number so people at home can call you from the US without long distance changes but this feature is not available for all locations in Canada. Best to get a phone which has the double minutes for life feature. One can also get bonus minutes by using promo codes found on the internet. Minutes are good for 90 days but they rollover as long as the phone is kept active. Some phones come with necessary chargers etc.

Hi,
We winter in Arizona for 5mo. On our way south we go into Walmart and get a phone and NET 10 package. They do all the work/registration right at the store. You can get a local phone # for where you will be. In addition you can get a Canadian phone # on the same phone. Worked great for us having both US and CND #.Will do the same again this year.Sure beats the heck out of the CND companies and their outrageous roaming fees.

Just to clarify, we are not full timing or even snowbirds. Just trying to plan a 2 week trip to Florida and still have a cell phone that won't cost a fortune.

At one time not long ago I bought a prepaid cell phone for the AT&T system that covered all the US. You ( I) paid the amount of money I wanted and was able to renew it as I needed. I started with about $25 and then added $$ as I used what I had. That should work for you. Check with them and also the other carriers.
Good luck.
