I would bet the stated value of $230K is the red flag for them. I have done life ins. for 43 years so far and the question always comes up if someone making $15K per year wants a $1,000,000 policy. There just isn't that kind of a loss if he dies. Go for actual cash value and you won't be so disappointed. Gale Hawkins even gave a reason.

Maybe that's why they are named "Progressive". They progressively lean forward to take more and more out of your pocket.

I have to put in my two cents worth and give Hartford an A+ for my experience with them. I have had them for about five years after leaving Good Sam because of their high rates. I have had two claims with them, one on my wife's car and one on my motorhome. I was treated fairly and they took care of the problem, even going farther than expected on my motorhome claim. I don't like AARP either, but the discount benefit overcomes that.

I do not understand why your progressive policy went up 50%. I have had Progressive since 2003 and now have it on a car, pickup, two motorcycle and a fulltimer's policy on the RV. My rates went down about 5% this year and I finally qualify for the zero deductible plan this year.
I ride it like I stole it!

Hartford did the same to me. Good quote, so I switched to them. Later a bill shows up and I happen to see the wife preparing it for payment. It was way above the quote. I dropped Hartford like a hot potato. No other insurance pulled this on me ever.

My Progressive Motor Home policy has been going down, but the autos went up. I switched the autos to Esurance. Lot cheaper.

In California you can file a complaint with the state insurance department and they will look into it.
Does your state have a similar department?

That's just one of their tricks.
I had my residence, 3 autos, RV and a big Umbrella policy with them for close to 15 years and in 2009 they raised our auto premiums a tad over $600.00 per year in one shot. No tickets, no wrecks just a few windshield claims was all the claims they ever paid out.
When I questioned the increase I was quoted the following: "because you turned 70 this year and you have become a higher risk".
Needless to say we took the entire package to another carrier and ended up saving close to $1,600 per year in premiums for an identical package. And,we just re-upped for year three with no increases.
Don't trust any of them get written quotes from all of them.

You did not lose anything as based on my experience if we had an accident and I thought it was your fault I would immediately hire an attorney to represent me. They must pay AARP a ton to sell to use old folks.
