I am getting ready to start on my RV life with my 4 dachsund mixes. I was concerned about them being tied outside. I looked into exercise pens and found exactly what I wanted at overstock.com of all places. They also had good prices. I bought 3 pens ( 16 linear ft each) that can be connected into one large pen. I was not sure how campgrounds felt about these until I read the entries here and I am so happy that I will be able to use them. I have also been working on barking and leash walking. The dogs still give me one bark when they see something and have been good with "hush", except on the 4th of July. I have worked up to walking 2 at a time but hope to get to all 4 soon.

a fencing with sturdy sides is more desired. even little dogs can jump onto a fence, and if it is weak floppy type fence, over they push that fence.

think sturdy

I have the travel pen. folds up easily. has a door for entrance. reasonable priced and will last forever and I use 3 large staples to secure the bottom rung into the ground.

Something to keep in mind is that although you may be buying for a smaller dog, you'll also want to keep bigger dogs and even stupid humans OUT. That being the case, you want something a little taller than what you might need for a little one. The thirty inch should do a fairly good job, 48 would be better but heavier also.

We have a wire fence that we put around the door. There is a board I cut to size that goes under the steps and connects to the fence to keep the furballs from slipping under the stairs.

We also use the pens for our 2 Chi's. We put their crates in there so they have their familiar "home" to sleep in which also adds a little extra protection from overhead predetors. Hubby will also drape a blanket or tarp over a portion of the area as well to discourage any birds of pry from swooping down. We are always outside when they are in their pen and they love the freedom it allows.

Like Portscanner, I have two super-athletic pointing dogs (Britanys). When I put them out at a campground, they are in a small ex-pen.

They could easily jump over it or just push it open, but are trained not to do that. They like to watch the people and critters going by and to sample all of the scents; and there are no ropes to tangle. They are also trained not to bark at passers by. With trained dogs, an ex-pen works great. I just fold it up when done and keep it in a basement compartment.

The only problem is that this does not keep busybodies from coming on to my site and giving the dogs food, reaching into the ex-pen, bringing their foo-foo dog up to "say hello", etc, etc. That's one of the many reasons the dogs and I avoid campgrounds when we can.

Camping neighbors had one for their small dog, he got out and came over to confront our cat who swelled to twice normal size and sent him running but he could well have attacked a less agressive cat. Opie had no front claws when we got him so he could not have done much.

As a dog show person, let me give you a couple of hints to make things easier. First off, buy your X-pens taller than you think, especially if your dog is not trained to stay in one. Secondly, the short X-pens are great to go along the side on your rig to keep them from going under it, you can split a "pool noodle" with a knife and run it along the top of the x-pen to keep them from scratching the paint on the rig. The more x-pens that you clip together, the more unstable it becomes. A table or chair placed outside will help and so do the wrought iron garden flag stakes.

Because my dogs travel to shows so often, they know not to bark at dogs walking by, people walking up to the rig to chat, etc. BUT, I still never leave them outside unattended. Also, they are way too big for anything to fly in and carry them away as they are about 115-140 pounds each and yes, we travel with all of them and some weekends have up to 6 or more in the RV. lol It sounds like chaos but we are used to it!
Our lives revolve around how many we can "fit" into the rig and X-pen configurations to keep everyone happy.
We have never had anyone question or complain about our dogs, even at the State Parks. I believe it is because they are very quiet, well trained and we clean up after them. Keeping my fingers crossed that it continues.
Anyway, happy travels with your pets. And make sure you keep them cool in this heat!

X2.
I show dogs too and we live and breath ex-pens. I full time now campaigning and the ex-pens are perfect for the CG's. The dogs love it they are free to run around or just lay out in the sun. I have more campers coming up and asking where to buy them and CG owners wishing everyone had one!

I have tops on mine because last year I got my first climber! I put her in the ex-pen and as fast as her feet hit the ground she was up and over the other side and running down the dog show rv parking lot.

Midwest makes a top for ex-pens. Which of course we now have. We don't leave home without them. The 3 ex-pens and tops ride on the bike rack off the back bumper on the MH when we are traveling. The last trip back from the Florida circuit we threw them on the back of the Toad along with the crate dolly!

I will try to get the name and make of the small foldable wire fence my brother uses for his two Yorkies and pass it on to you. I first saw it last summer. It's about 6-7 feet around, 2 foot high.Folds up real well. He has a woven outdoor mat that is put under it to keep the dogs off the dirt and they have learned not to soil the mat.
I think this may be what you are looking for,
Regards
