We will be travelling the Alaskan Highway next summer. I have been told that a great campground near Muncho Lake has closed. Believe the name was something like J&K or something like that. Does anyone know if it has reopened or can someone suggest a campground near there. Would like 50 amp if possible-- may not be an option. Otherwise can someone suggest a campground approximately one days travel from Dawson Creek on the Alaskan highway. Thanks for all your help.

You are probably thinking about the J & H RV park. It closed, as I remember about 2006 or 2007. It was a favorite of the caravans and was normally full. Stopped there for fuel in 2004, highest price on the highway for us that trip, and inquired about camping. Was told it was fully booked up by caravans for the night. J&H was a nice place to stop. It was originally set up as a fish camp with boat rentals, guides, etc. and lodging. Was called John's Fish Camp or something like that. Then it morphed into a campground, café, bar, gas station, etc.
Here is what J&H looked like last summer, 2009. The campground is directly behind the building. Place is for sale the last I heard. Muncho Lake Lodge is directly beside this.

I doubt you will find 50 amp anywhere along this area, since most/all of the campgrounds, private, supply their electricity by running generators. Northern Rockies Lodge is a nice looking place, new log lodge building, camp sites down by the lake. We have never stopped here but it looks good. The Muncho Lake Lodge which was closed for years was reported to be open last fall, by one of the forum members. They used to have a campground but have no idea if it is open or not. The forum member only commented that the gas pumps were working.
Along this stretch we normally try to stay at the Laird River Hot Springs Provincial Park. Great place but is dry camping.
Another campground in the Muncho Lake area that has plug ins is Toad River Lodge, 30 amps, I think was available. While I have stayed in the lodge, a few times, I have never stayed in the campground. Real nice runway just across the highway that I have used when flying the highway route.

We loved Strawberry Flats Provincial Park but it was dry camping only. Beautiful sites.

The Northern Rockies Lodge ... fellow told us this year that the overnight camping fee was $61! We couldn't believe it but he swore it was true.

Strawberry Flats provincial campground was nice but small sites. Macdonald Lake provincial campground is just a few miles further north and all the sites were lakeside and nice. We spent a couple of very pleasant nights there. Drycamping only though.

Liard Hotsprings Lodge is still having financial issues and apparently its on-again and off-again on whether they are open. When we went through a month ago the RV park was closed, the lodge as barely open, and they were selling fuel.

I can very easily believe it, as we stopped there for the night in early spring 2004 and paid $35 for electric only, no water as they had not de-winterized the system yet. Went into the lodge to have a dinner and we both had soup and salad, plus ice tea and the bill was over $50. Have not stopped anywhere near there since.

I can second the "Texan", regarding the Northern Rockies Lodge.
Last September, after a hard days drive from Destruction Bay, we decided to stop there for the night.
Likewise, the water had been turned off, and the sewer system had been "winterized", so all we had was 15A electrical service, that required us having an additional extension cord, as the service was at the street end of the pull-through.

Without looking up the actual charge in my records, I seem to remember it was either $46.00 or 48.00 for the night's stay.

As Gomer Pile would say, "Fool me once, sham on you, fool me twice, shame on me". They 'fooled' me once, but won't fool me again.
Rest assured, next week, when we pass through there, I don't plan on slowing down.

It really is a shame that so many RV Parks,Campgrounds and Eateries, have taken the High Road and are pricing Themselves Out of Business!
I realize full well that Taxes, Electricity, Water, sewage Disposal and Other Maintenance Costs have risen dramatically But!

Enough is enough.

We have decided that we will no longer support these Overpriced places. We are just saying No!
We began Camping as an inexpensive Family Holiday and We are going to return to the Inexpensive Part!

Here is the web site for the Northern Rockies Lodge and this page indicates for a deluxe lakefront site is $55cad plus tax, so the $61 figure mentioned by Sue t. could easily be correct. http://www.northernrockieslodge.com/RV_travelers/

We paid $1.79 a liter for gas there last week on the way south. And the service was grumpy to say the least. By far the highest prices we saw. Will never stop there again.
