Well were back home after a fantastic 2 weeks in Alaska. Chena hotsprings was great, everywhere else was great, but then there was Valdez, don't think we'll be making a return trip there. DW is already talking about a return trip especially to Chena, 156 degree water was fantastic!

Where is Chena? Why no return trip to Valdez?

My DW says no more trips to Alaska. We've been there three times driving. Gonna try to talk her into a cruise from Seattle or Prince Rupert. Personally, I think an important part of the trip is the drive. Alas, woe is me.

Chena is northeast, IIRC, of Fairbanks. X2, why not go back to Valdez?

Valdez was one of our favorite stops. But then we were there in June not August. I would imagine it was much prettier with lots of snow on the mountains.

I agree with the OP - we have never returned to Valdez after that first year - that is after 6 summers now and a winter. Chena Hot Springs road will always be one of our favorites since we volunteered at the State Rec Area our first year in Alaska. The moose would stick their head in our cabin window and we watched Lynx hunt beavers at the pond right outside our porch. Lots of boondock spots out there for those who like to rough it.

As for the Hot Springs - that water is even nicer in February!

Hmmm....Chena is not Valdez, Valdez is not Chena, but Valdez has merits of its own. Would be curious why Valdez is not on the return trip.

I suspect it has to do with the weather when one visited?? When we were there, it was great weather and Valdez was glorious!!! We stayed at Bear Paw II on the Harbor - just loved every minute; plus were enchanted by the drive (Thompson Pass was the BEST scenery of the trip!) However, when we moved on to Seward, it was rainy, Seward was a mudhole; and we opted to stay a little more inland.

Some day we'll go back and give Seward a second try :-)

Here's Valdez at the end of August '06
