I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this topic but I suspect that most Canadian on here read this forum.
My question is: "Is there any way that anyone has found to use a credit/debit card at the pumps in the southern US?" Almost all require a ZIP code or else it is necessary to go in and line up. Often cashiers make me leave my card at the cash while I go back out and fill up. I don't like doing that and I lost my card on one occasion. Some places make me prepay for a set amount of fuel which I invariably underestimate. The whole thing is nuisance.
This used to be mainly in the south but on our last trip through the NE US, I ran into the same problem at one or two gas stations so it seems to be heading north.
I would think that in light of the millions of dollars that Canadians spend in the US every winter, the gas companies would try to accommodate us a little better.
I'm sure that someone will say use cash but I prefer to use a credit card rather than carry cash.

I don't like that either so I send DW into the station with the credit card. When I'm finished filling, she pays with the card. At the price of gas or diesel, I'd almost have to tow an extra trailer just to carry the cash.

I've seen lots of stations that require zip codes for credit cards but debit cards usually not. Might consider using a debit card so your PIN serves as the safety. I guess going inside and leaving your card would be an acceptable alternative (since so many times you have to go inside to get a receipt anyway when stations don't keep their printer armed and ready). I guess it comes down to expecting them to trust YOU and NOT make you leave your card or you trust them by leaving it. I've often left them a credit card that has a very small limit (couple of hundred dollars or even a canceled card) and when it's time to pay I give them the real card. That way in the very unlikely event they try to use your number or make off with your card they've got nothing they can use.

Skipnchair, I like the cancelled card method.

Not having a US based card or a US address makes life inconvenient for us too at the pumps. That & the $75 limit at so many stations. It is rare for me to pit anything less than $125 in the tanks.

I don't worry about someone losing or misusing my credit card. Several times in the last two years, strange charges have shown up on my credit cards for items such as Mother's Day flower delivery and purchasing a mail order computer. In every case, I just called the credit card companies, and they immediately removed the charge from my account. Then, in the mail in a week or two I received a form to sign saying that I didn't make the purchase. No problem.

hi
here is a cut & paste I save from another forum....
regards, pdq
____________

If gas station needs your postal code, use:
BLAINE, WA 98231
or

Since this very problem ticked me off on the way home from Florida in Nov., I'm updating this thread with info I read in CSA News (Canadian Snowbird Association magazine)
According to a 'Bird Talk' contributor, you enter the three numbers in your postal code followed by 00 and this works as our (Canadian) equivalent of the zip code.

Debit cards are much less secure than credit cards. Search debit card fraud. The problem with either is not just fraudulent charges on your card but they can scan the card and save the info which gives them plenty of information to steal your identity.
We do the same as RRUGG does. Also if we end up in a station that requires us to leave a card or other information we just pump in a few gallons and pay cash then stop at the next place.

This is really a Non-issue and I hope, the worst problem you ever have to deal with while traveling.
Just consider how much $$ you are saving over Canadian fuel prices for the minor inconvenience of a few minutes.
I remember when there was no such thing as "pay at the pump"

And carrying CASH is not a real option either. We went in to use cash a a station at Top Sail NC, and they would not take $100.00 bills. I said thanks, and drove to another station. I thought it kind of stupid, since my bill would be around $80.00

Talk to your bank maybe they have a better solution and possibly they could explain the why's/why nots better?
Even with a US address I still have fueling issues at times.I understand the limit $75. because of fraud.Really don't have a good answer I think we all have had dealings with paying at the pump. But if I'm on the road hey I can't complain as I'm on vacation and seeing the countryside...could be worse?
