We travel with our Radio Shack scanner and it has provided us with entertainment along with useful information. Are they legal in Canada, or should I leave it home? I don't want any problems at the border crossing going north from east Glacier. How about returning to the USA?

I can't tell You if they are Legal or Not! lots of Folks have them here for the same reason that You do! The Border Patrol in Canada will not care if You have a Scanner or Not!

Scanners are legal in Canada. The only issue is if you used the information heard for an unlawful purpose or you interefered with emergency services in some manner.

Scanner are legal as above. Some provinces outlaw radar detectors.

They are illegal in some states and some models are illegal in the entire USA. The laws on what you can listen too are quite different in the US than Canada.

In some states, Indiana and Minnesota for example use is illegal while mobile with no listed caveat.

Most states in which they are illegal use the caveat "illegal used in the furtherance of a crime".

My understanding is that they are legal to use here in Canada as long as you don't repeat what you've heard, use what you hear for personal gain or use one in the commission of a crime. In chatting with some LEOs over the years about radar detectors, I learned that having one in your vehicle pretty much eliminates the chance of getting a warning if you are stopped for speeding or some other infraction. I wonder if getting stopped with a scanner could also lead to some extra attention. Knock on wood, I haven't been stopped in a long time.
