this subject has been argued before,I converted to a household fridge 2yrs ago &it works great,it will run on 2 12v deep cycles for about 24 hrs before they go dead,I installed a 1000w inverter to run it while traveling,it needed 1000w because of the startup surge,it works but isnt for everybody

Whirlpool has a good match for your four door Norcold. I just put one in my rig and it was the exact width and depth, and just an inch and a half taller. Trimmed the top of the cabinet and it was an exact fit. Didn't need any trim pieces along the sides, looks just like a factory job. Refer cost less than $600 at Lowes. Had to remove the doors to get it in, no biggie! If you have questions, you can contact me.

I know several who have used a whirlpool refer and they say the same thing I forget the mdl number though.

What about the weight comparisons?

GOOD question. Anyone know?

I'm in the middle of replacing the RV fridge with a compressor fridge, the RV fridge is significantly heavier.

Thanks everyone, bought a 14 cu' from sears w/icemaker,its a couple of inches taller and slightly narrower. Son-in-law is a cabinet maker so he can finish the trim if required. Its going into RV shop next week, it will go in through the drivers door.
Glad to hear they are lighter in weight.

You cannot run a household fridge on a 200 watt inverter. With a decent inverter and extra batteries the OP can "camp" at Wal Mart without using the genset. While driving down the road the fridge will run off the inverter/batteries forever!!! The batteries will be charged by the alternator. No need to run the genset. I think some of the posters should do a little research. Most new mid priced DP's are equipped with household fridges. They are STANDARD equipment on many FW products. Times do change!!

As an example, I looked at a Samsung 25 cubic foot fridge (model RF226AB). Per its energy star rating, it uses 470 kwh/year. I round that to 500kwh/year and that works out to 57 watts if it ran all the time. It doesn't run constantly so the peak demand when it's on is much higher. But from an energy usage point of view, integrated over a day or longer, it's consuming 57 watts all the time or about as much as 6 of the 10 watt halogen bulbs I had before I switched to LED's. The cost of this fridge is $1,600.

The supporting data came from:

I guess I missed the 'peak' vs 'average' part of the discussion. Although, I would like to see current (amps) measurements.

Quite a few guys with Phaetons and Allegro Busses (me included) have replaced their Norcolds with Whirlpool or Kenmore. The space is virtually the same but the residential versions have more room, keep stuff colder and in general work better. I do not have auto gen start, but with 6 batteries I can easily run the refer 8 hrs on the inverter. If you go over to tiffinrvnetwork.com and search residential refrig I think you will find most everyone very happy with the swap. Good luck! Safe travels. Cheers to hard ice cream and cold beer.

Just this past week, my model 1292 fridge stopped cooling. Took the MH in for service and RV shop said the cooling coils had sprung a leak, and needed to be replaced. I've got a MH service contract with a $200 deductible, so I guess I'll replace the coil for now. A reman coil with a 2 year warranty was $850, plus 4 hrs labor...about $1400 total. Another option was to go with a new aftermarket coil for about $1200, or a new coil from Dometic for about $1950. They don't make my model fridge anymore, and the replacement is about 2 inches deeper and would stick out from the original hole.

Which model Whirlpool did you purchase? I have a Dometic RM1350 4 door and it sucks. 5ver is one year old this week and am on my 3rd refer and still junk.
