We are thinking of heading up to the Flagstaff area this weekend and park/camp under the pines. Anyone have any good places they could recommend that would also be quad (OHV) friendly?

What's work? Oh, playing in the sand in the Southwest!
You can find us hanging in our Jayco T 24 ZX or out riding.

Cinders borders Sunset Crater National Monument and is an authorized OHV area. We were last there mid Aug. Fire Road 776 is the normal entrance and was closed due to washed out roads from the heavy rains they had in the area in July & early Aug but you can get there by going through Sunset Crater National Monument. Just tell the park ranger you are going to Cinders and he will let you in for free and give directions.

I was thinking off the grid camping instead of these parks but this helps me see some things in the area. Thank you for sharing.

Do we access FR776 from Route 89? I'm having trouble locating it.

No, you have to go through the park entrance for Sunset Crater. At entrance you'll have to go through a "check-in" shack where you just tell the ranger you're going to the Cinders OHV area. Go through the park about 8 miles or so and you'll come up on FR776 on the right. It's really the first unpaved road available and it's at the end of a downhill grade. We were there last weekend and had fun.

I-17 north to Kelly Canyon Road (5 to 10 miles north of Munds Park). There is plenty of camping east of I-17 along Forest Service Road 700. Good ATV riding too.

In case you arrive late in the day and the ranger isn't manning the check-in station. I believe FR 776 is about 4 miles down the road past the ranger's booth. You will follow the road through the park and then it's on the right as you are coming down the hill. It will be a dirt road. You have to go about a 1/2 mile before they allow camping (there will be signs). You will see National Park camping on your left shortly after entering the park. Ignore that and keep on going. You have to get out of the park boundary to be in the OHV area. If you haven't seen other toyhaulers....you probably aren't in the right area!

You use to be able to enter 776 from 89 but the road is washed out. Like Flattman said, go couple miles further to the Sunset Crater entraance.
