Where did you camp in Deadhorse? I don't find any campgrounds there? Did you dry camp?

I don't think there are any campgrounds in Deadhorse. We didn't stay over but turned around and headed back to Coldfoot. That was a long day for us. We had out dog with us and the accomodations in Deadhorse did not accept pets. I must tell you that Deadhorse wasn't at all like we expected it to be. As I stated in my first post, it rained for us, most of the way. Everything was mud. Even the buildings. When I put my hand on the handle of the truck to open the door, the mud would run down my hand it was so bad. LOL The grader was working on the roads plowing mud. The hotels/motels or whatever you call them, looked like trailers stacked together. When my husband suggested we might as well start the trip back to Coldfoot I didn't try to encourage him to stay. LOL

The Arctic Carabou had places with elect. But we camped about 20 miles from Prudhoe, down a pipeline access road and right on a small river. A very pretty site. There are many such sites easily accessible and heavily used during hunting season.

When I worked in Deadhorse, I stayed in the motel or whatever you call them. They were clean and the warm and sized for one person. Then I walked to the dining hall where the food was terrific. Order what you want and have the way you wanted. That was in the dead of winter with the outside temp at minus 58!! Of course in 1975 it was a lot different than it is now. But fun to remember.

When we went up there, we headed about7 miles south of Deadhorse, to a place just off the haul road alongside an unpronounceable ("Sag...") river.

Deadhorse is an oilfield camp--there is no "town". It has all the charm of an industrial park, without the landscaping.

In 2009 an 8' x 10' room with private bath for 2 at The Prudhoe Bay Hotel was $250.00 per night but that included meals. The meals were fantastic. Reminded me of the construction camp mess halls when I worked for RMK-BRJ in Vietnam.

In 2005 we stayed at the Arctic Caribou Inn for $125.00 but the price in 2009 was $250.00 with no meals. They only serve meals when there is a tour bus in.

I think that is a very appropriate to refer to Deadhorse as a "camp" as it surely doesn't look like a town, however, I guess somebody considers it a town as they have a zip code. LOL

Can you buy fuel in Deadhorse, e.g. gasoline, propane? Other supplies?

I can't speak for propane and "other supplies" as we went with our own, however, gas was readily available at $4.49 per gallon both at Deadhorse and at Coldfoot.

We saw propane for sale as well as the diesel we bought. We went to Prudhoe to see the industrial area, see what the coastal plain(and the North Slope) was like, hopefully see Musk Ox(which we did) therefore we were not disappointed at all. The food at the Arctic Carabou(although a buffet) was good a surprisingly priced considering some of the prices we experienced in some of the more civilized places in Alaska and Canada. One hint, try not to include the trip in a rigid itinerary. We monitored the weather in Fairbanks, Coldfoot, and Prudhoe Bay and went elsewhere until the weather looked favorable. In fact that is how we travelled in the North for the last 6 weeks. We skirted around weather and fires and for most part missed a lot of wet weather and smoke. In any event the trip to Prudhoe was a major success for us.
