Just returned to Fairbanks from Deadhorse with our Sprinter B. Weather was outstanding, cold and crisp at night, and clear and sunny during the day. The road was much better than we anticipated including 24 miles of new pavement just north of Coldfoot. Scenery spectacular, people really friendly, food was good. After seeing the coastal plain and the installation at Prudhoe sure wonder why they haven't opened the area of coastal plain in ANWR. Alaska DOT does a great job on the roads some of the rough sections were smoothed out by the time we returned.

Wow, I'm jealous! Only got as far as the Arctic Circle turnout last year and would have liked to go all the way to Deadhorse, but we weren't prepared to go that far in the toad. The road, as you say, is very good, the worst parts being the paved sections with the frost heaves and potholes. ADot is constantly working on the road to keep it nice for the truckers. Next time I might consider taking the motorhome up to Deadhorse.....it all depends on the weather. If it rains, you can be in BIG trouble.

We took the motorhome 5 miles past Coldfoot in 2005 and parked at the BLM campground. In 2009 we took the toad from Fairbanks and stayed at a B&B in Wiseman going and returning.
Will be going back in 2013 and will take the toad again. Even though the roads are good for 55 to 60 mph in the toad they will beat a motorhome up at 30 to 35 mph and that is as fast as I would drive the motorhome. In the toad you have plenty of time to dodge or slow down for the holes in the road but not in the motorhome.

We took our 94 RT as far as the Arctic Circle this June, and have regretted ever since not going all the way. Had a lot of wet weather & the road was pretty rough & we wimped-out. We're going back next year and WILL make it to Deadhorse unless we break.

Five years ago BILLEE and I wimped out after only 10 miles because of mud and the fact our sprinter B was new. That's one reason when we came up this year our first goal was to complete the journey. It gave us another reason to come back.

So glad to hear you enjoyed your trip as much as we did this summer. We didn't have the best of weather, rain all the way, but it was worth it. The stories we heard about how rude the truck drivers were did not prove to be the case for us. As we approached a truck, we slowed, pulled over as far as we could, they did the same, had a big wave and continued on. No broken windows, etc. It was a great experience.

I am trying to learn as much as I can about traveling in Alaska. How far apart are the towns (fuel stops) on that route to Deadhorse?

It's covered in the Milepost, and the BLM has a really good brochure on the highway as well. Basically, there are a few fuel stops right around the bridge across the Yukon River, at Coldfoot, and then in Deadhorse. So, roughly speaking, Deadhorse to Coldfoot is around 200 miles, and the Coldfoot to the Yukon is on the order of 100 miles. This is VERY sparsely-populated country!
