That statement could have been witten by me. The DW and I went last year. she has said almost th same thing.
I say if you think that you can handle the 5 gkids.... go for it. Grandma will be sitting at home wishing she were with you. She will be on the plane after about the 1st or 2nd call from the grandkids.
You never know what may be aroud the corner in lifes circus. This spring my sweetheart was diagnosed with and had a radical historectomy for stage IV ovarian/endo cancer. She is 58. She is putting up a good fight and we are talking of our next vacation... we just don't know when or where yet.

Due to time restraints we only had three weeks for our AK trip this year and did a fly drive with our two GKs (girl 10 and boy 8) and renting a RV. They loved it and I'm sure they will remember it forever. I don't know that I could handle taking five GKs at one time and think that maybe spliting it like Alaskan-RVer suggested is a great idea. I'd do it that way if I had more GKs. I'm looking for a gently used Class C so we can do more camping with the GKs and even thinking about doing some one at a time trips for a more intimate trip with each kid. Go for it and whatever, you decide you will all love and remember the trip.
PS: My 70th birthday was while we were in Denali.

Unfortunately, the DW insists that once was enough for her and suggests that if I really want to go again I could go by myself or take someone else. It all sounds sane so far. Right? Here is where I break down. I am thinking , in broad terms, of making the trip in 1012 with my five grandchildren. Then, they will range from 17 down to 9 and I think it would be a great vacation for them and give them something that they will remember for their lives. One son would help me drive up and spend a little time and then fly home. My other son would fly up, spend a little time, and help me drive home. I know there is an awful lot to consider. It will require a lot of cooperation and organization and tons of patience.
Is this possible? What pitfalls am I overlooking? Any help r hints will be appreciated.

My DW and I have been taking our oldest granddaughter on our summer vacations since she was a baby, she is now 11. A few things that you will require is a certified permission travel document allowing the children to be with you, for each grandchild. Both of the parents must sign the document and be witnessed. Our daughter and her X did this quite easily at a Notary for a small fee I think it was $50. You will also require a passports for the kids.
The permission travel document that we have has no end date on it. We have been using the same document for over 6 years now. We have been asked by the Border guys a number of times to see the document as well a few times they just wanted to make sure we had it however never asked to see it.
Your Trip sounds like a great plan to us.

We are planning to go back to Alaska in 2013 (when I retire again), and we plan to have at least two of the grandbabies fly up and join us for part of the summer. The oldest will be 7 by then and the next one will be 5. (The Mommy can come if she wants to, but she's optional.) The oldest boy loves to fish and I can't wait to tie him into a halibut!

I think it is doable, if not totally exhausting
one thing I'd do is a weekend trip with all of them before you go. like now. so you could make any rules/changes etc you'd need to have for that length of time.
once a year our 2 kids and my nieces all end up on a beachfront resort together. 5 kids under 10. it is a loud and noisy blast. One set of GP is there as well. they love it but they do enjoy the quiet when we all leave. something to consider

TEO, I'm jealous that you have an opportunity like that. Much more important than what the grandkids remember about Alaska is what they'll remember about their Grandpa - and that truly is priceless.

5! Are you mad? At any age for any length of time over 2 days, no stinkin' way! They will wear you out. One kid for 1 week maybe. But, if you decide to go, I wish the absolute best for you and will pray all 6 of you make it back.
