I was down there a couple months ago. The road is under repair still, near the epicenter of the quake in April. About 6 miles of dicy dirt road... Rumor has it it's gonna be till Nov... to get it finished. it's back to pavement just before Campo Mosquito. The road is perfect from the army check point on... the posted speed is 110 KPH (used to be the worst part)
I'll be going down mid Sept.. I'll post what I see.

Yes but that report is approximately 1600 miles from San Felipe. So the comment I get is that it is compared to telling me there is Violence in Minnesota so don't go there.
I want to know if anybody knows of this type of violence on the baja penninsula.

I just sold my place in Baja (between Rosarito and Ensenada) I had for 21 yrs, not because I'm scared but because I was tired of paying the rent and now I have a toyhauler, I keep in touch with many people down there and is pretty much the same as its always been, Yes there has been some violence, they shot up the police station in La Mision, theres been a few things in eastern TJ and Mexicali but those are places I would not hang out in anyways but there has been some drug violence, there has been an increase in overall crime but its due to the bad economy just like here. I was shocked about 1 1 1/2 yrs ago they caught the guy who got rid of bodies for the TJ cartel right in my RV park (Baja Seasons) but no shootout.
In Mexico, drive during daylight hours or early evening, dont pull over for an unmarked police car, wait till you get to a populated area, traveling in a caravan is always good, dont break laws and if you get pulled over for nothing then tell the cop you want to go to the station and see the judge and 99% of the time they will let you go. Be aware of your surroundings and if something doesnt seem right then its not like road construction at 11pm and you are flagged to pull over.
I have found at least near the border the cops are more tourist friendly and there is a high military presence and they will ocassionally search your vehicle especially black Suburbans and Tahoes with tinted windows.
Beleive me they want the tourists and its been a ghost town in many spots.
I love it down there and I will continue to go just be safe.
I wont go to parts of Santa Ana or South Central at night nor some parts of Baja. Just use common sense.
