These problems with the battery draining on the towed vehicle must be dependent upon the towed vehicle requirements. We currently tow a Honda Accord using the Patriot and the only time we had a low battery was due to operator error. We left the Accord's key in the wrong position. Not only did the battery die after about 6 hours of towing, but the Accord's odometer registered towing miles as well. After charging the Accord's battery overnight and re-reading the instructions, we have NEVER since had a problem of draining the towed vehicle's battery.

Age of battery and size of cigar lighter wire will have an effect on brake systems
I never had a battery go dead from towing until this year. battery is 6 years old. Just today finished installing charge wiring from MH to Jeep so it doesn't happen again. My neighbor used my Brake Buddy last spring on a trip to Tupelo and had to wire a spare cigar socket directly to battery to get Buddy to work. He has an Avalanche and the stock wiring is too small to carry the load, Brake Buddy would never pump up and shut off.

I'm going to play it safe for our first long trip. Went & bought one of those portable jump start battery packs from Pep Boys you can plug in to charge up & then hook it up to the veh with the dead battery to get it started. Only $36.. cheap insurance just in case...
